  1. Vicmap Topographic Map Series

Orphan date February 2009 Wikify date April 2010 Vicmap Topographic Map Series is a Map series series of topographic maps covering the State of Victoria, Australia. Created and maintained by the State of Victoria, the map series is currently in a transition phase, with traditional Vicmap Topographic maps being gradually replaced with a new map series. History The traditional set of Vicmap Topographic maps consist of approximately 850 1 25000 and 1 50000 hardcopy topographic map sheets printed and made available for sale to the general public. These map sheets cover 80 of Victoria. Most of the mapsheets are single format at a scale of 1 25000. Less inhabited areas of the state are covered by double format 1 25000 and 1 50000 mapsheets. All of these maps were produced using traditional cartographic methods, with the majority being last updated in the 1970s and 1980s. New Series In 2004 a proposal was put forward by Spatial Information Infrastructure to create a new series of Topographic Maps. There were two main reasons for a new series to be developed. Firstly, the majority of the old map series utilises the now obsolete AGD66 datum and secondly, the bulk of the old map series is out of date, with 40 of these map sheets being 21 to 30 years old, 50 11 to 20 years old and only 10 less than 10 years old. 1. Generative topographic map

Generative topographic map GTM is a machine learning method that is a probabilistic counterpart of the self organizing map SOM , is provably convergent and does not require a shrinking Neighbourhood mathematics neighborhood or a decreasing step size. It is a generative model the data is assumed to arise by first probabilistically picking a point in a low dimensional space, mapping the point to the observed high dimensional input space via a smooth function , then adding noise in that space. The parameters of the low dimensional probability distribution, the smooth map and the noise are all learned from the training data using the expectation maximization EM algorithm. GTM was introduced in 1996 in a paper by Christopher M. Bishop , Markus Svensen, and Christopher K. I. Williams. Details of the algorithm The approach is strongly related to density networks which use importance sampling and a multi layer perceptron to form a non linear latent variable model . In the GTM the latent space is a discrete grid of points which is assumed to be non linearly projected into data space. A Gaussian noise assumption is then made in data space so that the model becomes a constrained Gaussian mixture model mixture of Gaussians . Then the model s likelihood can be maximized by EM. In theory, an arbitrary nonlinear parametric deformation could be used. The optimal parameters could be found by gradient descent etc. The suggested approach to the nonlinear mapping is to use a radial basis function .... The Topographic Atlas of Switzerland German language German Topographischer Atlas der Schweiz , also known as the Siegfried Atlas or Siegfried Map German Siegfriedkarte French language French Carte Siegfried is an official map series of Switzerland . Its publication was begun by the Swisstopo Federal Topographic Bureau under Hermann Siegfried , and continued from 1870 to 1922. Since it is, in today s parlance, not strictly an atlas but a map series, History of Cartography map historians now describe it only by the expression Siegfried Map . The Siegfried Map was based on the original records that had already been created for the earlier Dufour Map . However, the Siegfried Map offered greater precision than the Dufour Map, by using a scale of 1 25,000 for the Swiss plateau , the French Prealps , the Jura Mountains and southern Ticino , and a scale of 1 50,000 for other mountain regions and the Swiss Alps . 1. Topographic Abney Level

Orphan date February 2009 A Topographic Abney Level is an instrument used in surveying which consists of a fixed sighting tube, a movable spirit level that is connected to a pointing arm, and a protractor scale. The Topographic Abney Level is an easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and when used correctly an accurate surveying tool. The Topographic Abney Level is used to measure degrees, percent of grade, topographic elevation, and chainage correction. By using trigonometry the user of a Topographic Abney Level can determine height, volume, and grade. The Topographic Abney Level is used at the eye height of the surveying surveyor and is best employed when teamed with a second surveyor of the same eye height. This allows for easy sighting of the level and greater accuracy. A ranging pole can be marked at the eye height of the level user or the approximate location of the eye height i.e. chin, nose, top of head of the level surveyor must be know of the ranging surveyor. Origins The Abney level was invented by Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney Born 24 Jul 1843 Died 3 Dec 1920 who was an English astronomer and chemist best known for his pioneering of color photography and color vision. Sir Abney invented this instrument under the employment of the School of Military Engineering in Chatham, England in the 1870s. It is described by W. & L. E. Gurley as an English modification of the Locke hand level, noting that it gives angles of elevation and is also divided for slopes, as 1 to 2, 2 to 1, etc. Since the main tube of this instrument is square, it can be applied to any plane surface. The clinometer scale is graduated to degrees, and read by vernier to 5 minutes. Usage Use of an Abney level is discussed in volume 12 of the Forest Quarterly sup 1 sup published by the New York State College of Forestry in 1914. Discussion on the use of the Abney level starts on page 370. References references Bryn Hubbard, Neil F. 2005 , Glasser Field Techniques in Glaciology and Glacial Geomorphology ...   more details
