Henry began life as a merchant, travelling to Haiti until the Haitian revolution revolution there. He returned to France and studied painting and particularly restoration with Jean Baptiste Regnault . He augmented his skill in restoration with expertise learned during travels to Italy , Belgium , and England . This led to his gaining a position as an expert commisionner with the Royal Museums. This position facilated his amassing of a significant personal collection of art. When he felt death approaching he decided to ignite the flame of art in his native town by donating his collection and establishign a museum. On the 29 July 1835 the town of Cherbourg inaugurated the Mus e Thomas Henry, with Henry s collection of 163 paintings valued at 120,000 francs. Today the collection forms the basis of the Mus e des beaux arts Thomas Henry , which has the third most important collection of paintings in Normandy , comprising over 300 paintings, dating principally from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries. The museum is located in Cherbourg Octeville .   1. Henry Goddard Thomas

    Major General Henry Goddard Thomas April 5, 1837 January 23, 1897 was an Union American Civil War Union general in the American Civil War . A native of Portland, Maine , Thomas graduated from Amherst College in 1858 and was admitted to the bar shortly thereafter. He enlisted as a private in the 5th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment . As part of the 5th, Thomas was present at the First Battle of Bull Run and the Peninsula Campaign among other battles. In February 1863, Thomas was appointed colonel of the 2nd Regiment Infantry U.S. Colored Troops . In December 1863, Thomas was appointed colonel of the 19th Regiment Infantry U.S. Colored Troops . In March 1865, he was appointed major general of volunteers for his service during the war.     Henry Thomas 1874 1950s? ref Some sources state 1930 ref was an American pre World War II country blues singer, songster and musician. He was often billed as Ragtime Texas . Thomas was born in Big Sandy, Texas . He began his musical career as an itinerant songster and recorded twenty three sides for Vocalion Records between 1927 and 1929. Thomas accompanied himself on guitar and on panpipes quills , a folk instrument fabricated from Sugarcane cane reeds, and would play both instruments and provide vocals for the same song. The instrument is similar in sound to the zampona , used by musicians in Peru and Bolivia.
