It was created in 1849 by Charles Allen to protest the rise of Irish, Roman Catholic, and German immigration into the United States. To join the Order, a man had to be at least 21 years old, a Protestant, and willing to obey the Order s dictates without question. The play was inspired by a political argument Simon witnessed between Liberalism liberal writer Paddy Chayefsky and a Conservatism conservative woman. While it features Simon s lively comic style still on display on Broadway in Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple when The StarSpangled Girl debuted it was not well received.
