    Claudius Clavus Suartho also known as Nicholas Niger , lang da Claudius Clauss n Swart , September 14, 1388 ? , was a Denmark Danish geographer sometimes considered to be the first Nordic Countries Nordic cartographer . It is believed that he was born in the village of Salling Funen Salling on the Danish island of Funen . He is commemorated by a plaque in the local Aagaarden . In 1412 13 at the age of 25 he started to travel around Europe and appeared eleven years later 1423 24 in Rome . It is believed he travelled as far north as the 70 10 N. latitude lat. In Rome he became friends with the cardinal Giordano Orsini and the pope s secretary Gian Francesco Poggio Bracciolini , who were among those working to update the old Roman cartography. Claudius contributed to a more realistic description of Nordic countries, in particular Iceland and Greenland , and was probably the first cartographer to put Greenland on a map. He is also known for having named Greenlandic places by using lyrics from old folk songs. Unfortunately, most of his work including two maps are lost, but a copy has been preserved through the German cartographers Donnus Nicholas Germanus and Henricus Martellus Germanus , and in the nineteenth century more texts were rediscovered in the imperial library at Vienna .     Claudius Mamertinus flourished mid late 4th century was an official in the Roman Empire . In late 361 he took part in the Chalcedon tribunal to condemn the ministers of Constantius II , and in 362, he was made consul as a reward by the new Emperor Julian the Apostate Julian on January 1 of that year he delivered a panegyric in Constantinople by way of thanks to the Emperor. The text of this is still extant, preserved in the Panegyrici Latini it is there followed by two panegyrics from three quarters of a century earlier, addressed to the Emperor Maximian the first delivered in 289 and the second in 290 or 291 . The text of the Panegyrici that has survived also attributes these also to Claudius Mamertinus it is unclear whether there was an older orator of the same name or the text is corrupt. The Claudius Mamertinus made consul in 362 later went on to become governor of Italy , Africa , and Illyria before being removed from public office in 368 for embezzlement. Rey s family owned a prosperous printing works which went bankrupt in 1847. Fortunately, one of his uncles, the owner of a vineyard producing Morgon , offered him employment. Impassioned by entomology, he began a collaboration with Etienne Mulsant 1797 1880 who was then working on Histoire naturelle des col opt res de France Natural History of the Coleoptera Beetles of France. In 1852, Rey settled in Lyon , in the residence of his brother in Saint Genis Laval. He took his Winter holidays in the South of France seeking insects. His work with Mulsant lasted until Mulsant s death. The majority of the texts on Staphylinidae are the work of the two entomologists but five parts Habrocerinae, Tachyporinae, Trichophyinae, Picropeplinae and Steninae are the work of Rey alone. The Coleoptera are not the only study of Mulsant and Rey since they also worked on naturelle des punaises de France the Natural history of the Hemiptera True Bugs of France. In addition to these publications, Claudius Rey wrote many articles on Coleoptera in journals . Personal life The second son of Sarjeant Ash 1754 1820 and Lydia Ash n e Smith, Claudius Ash was born in Bethnal Green , London , on 2 March 1792. He married Sarah Butler on 11 March 1813 and had eight children, four of whom, along with other members of the Ash family and their descendants, were engaged in dental manufacturing or practised as dental surgeons. Claudius Ash s family were members of the Catholic Apostolic Church Irvingites . He died in London on 3 November 1854. Work Claudius Ash followed his father into the profession of silversmith ing and goldsmith ing in the firm of Ash & Sons, 64 St James s Street, Westminster. In about 1820 he was asked to apply his craftsmanship to making a set of dentures .
