Orphan date February 2009 The Hindu Telugu people Telugu society is classified into a number of caste s based on occupation. Forward Castes Forward castes are the castes which are politically, educationally and financially well off and don t qualify for government reservations in educational and government positions. Caste is not a Varna so one should not be getting confused with these two words. Hindu law permits only the higher castes that come under Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vysya Varnas to wear the sacred thread. Among all the forward castes today, with the exception of Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vysya castes, some were historically considered as lower castes according to the Hindu varna system. These castes gained higher status over time. Also, there are some castes which enjoyed higher rank historically and are now considered as backward castes due to their financial status. Hence, all higher castes are not necessarily forward castes.
