Archaeological excavations that took place at this location in 1963, uncovered the remains of a city that existed there between the 11th 14th BCE and was intermittently inhabited during the Byzantine period. The Israeli National Institute of Oceanography is situated at Shikmona. Shikmona was declared a 1677 dunam nature reserve in 2008.
