  1. Sterile talc powder

Orphan date January 2009 Sterile talc powder is a mineral , usually used in a powdered form. In cancer treatment , sterile talc powder is used to prevent pleural effusion s an abnormal collection of fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall . Sterile talc powder is inserted into the space, causing it to close up, so fluid cannot collect there. Sterile Talc Powder is a sclerosing agent intended for intrapleural administration supplied in a single use 100 ml brown glass bottle, sealed with a gray, 20  mm stopper and covered with a flip off seal. Each bottle contains a minimum of 5.0 g of Talc USP Ultra 2000 Talc , either white or off white to light gray, asbestos free and brucite free grade of talc of controlled particle size. The composition of the talc is 95 talc as hydrated magnesium silicate. The empirical formula of talc is Mg3 Si4 010 OH 2 with a molecular weight of 379.3. Associated naturally occurring minerals include chlorite hydrated aluminum and magnesium silicate. , dolomite calcium and magnesium carbonate , calcite calcium carbonate and quartz. Talc is practically insoluble in water and in dilute solutions of acids and alkali hydroxides. The finished product has been sterilized by gamma irradiation. Sterile Talc Powder, administered intrapleurally via a chest tube, is indicated as a sclerosing agent to decrease the recurrence of malignant pleural effusions in symptomatic patients. 1. Mining in Austria

Mining in Austria is an industry on the decline. After a period of postwar expansion, mineral production has stagnated in recent decades, and metals mining continues to decline, because of high operating costs, increased foreign competition, low ore grades, and environmental problems. All the metal mines in the country were closed, except an iron ore operation at Erzberg producing 1.8 million tons of iron ore and concentrate in 2000 and a tungsten operation at Mittersill , which was the West s largest underground tungsten mine. Most of the growth in the mineral resources area was in the production of industrial minerals, the area in which future mining activities will most likely be concentrated, mostly for domestic consumption. Minerals Austria produces 2.5 of the world s graphite , ranking 10th in the world, and is one of the world s largest sources of high grade graphite. In 2000, estimated output was 12,000 metric tons, down from 30,000 metric tons in 1996. The country produces 1.6 of the world s talc , ranking ninth, with a reported output in 2003 of 137,596 tons of crude talc and soapstone . The country s only producer of talc, Luzenac Naintsch AG , operated three mines, in the Styria region, and produced a range of talc, chloritic talc, dolomite talc, and chlorite mica quartz ores. Output of other minerals in 2003 output in metric tons, include limestone and marble , 24,477,000 metric tons dolomite , 6,079,000 metric tons, for the domestic cement industry, along with calcite and limestone gypsum and anhydrite , 1,004,000 metric tons brine salt , 3,422,000 cubic meters salt mines are owned by the government, with plans to privatize the operations tungsten, 1,400 tons pumice trass , 4,000 tons and crude kaolin , 100,000 metric tons. Gold production in 2003 was 25 kg. Crude magnesite production was reported at 767,000 metric tons in 2003. Lignite production has been declining since 1963. In 2003, lignite production totaled 1,152,000 metric tons. Production of bi ...   more details

  1. Glidant

unreferenced date May 2009 A glidant is a substance that is added to a Powder substance powder to improve its flowability . A glidant will only work at a certain range of concentration s. Above a certain concentration, the glidant will in fact function to inhibit flowability Which means that there s a critical concentration to be used if increasing powder s flowability is intended with respect to the glidant and the powder properties . In Tablet pharmacy tablet manufacture, glidants are usually added just prior to compression. Examples Examples of glidants include magnesium stearate , Aerosil colloidal silicon dioxide , starch and talc . Mechanism Of Action A Glidant s effect is due to a counter action to factors resulting in poor flowability of powders. For instance, correcting surface irregularity, reducing interparticular friction & decreasing surface charge. The result is a decrease in the angle of repose which is an indication of an enhanced powder s flowability. Category Granular materials physics stub ja ...   more details
