Systemsneuroscience is a subdiscipline of neuroscience which studies the function of neural circuits and systems. It is an umbrella term, encompassing a number of areas of study concerned with how neuron nerve cells behave when connected together to form neural networks . At this level of analysis, neuroscientists study how different neural circuits analyze sensory information, form perceptions of the external world, make decisions, and execute movements. Researchers in systemsneuroscience are concerned with the relation between molecular neuroscience molecular and cellular neuroscience cellular approaches to understanding brain structure and function, as well as with the study of high level mental functions such as cognitive linguistics language , memory , and Consciousness Cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience self awareness which are the purview of behavioral neuroscience behavioral and cognitive neuroscience cognitive neuroscience . Systems neuroscientists typically employ techniques for understanding networks of neurons while they function in vivo e.g. electrophysiology single or multi electrode recording , in vivo imaging, fMRI, PET . The term is commonly used in an educational framework a common sequence of graduate school neuroscience courses consists of cellular molecular neuroscience for the first semester, then systemsneuroscience for the second semester. It is also sometimes used to distinguish a subdivision within a neuroscience department at an academic institution. A major systemsneuroscience meeting. Neuroscience Category Neurophysiology Category Neural coding ...refimprove date May 2008 Sensory neuroscience is a subfield of neuroscience which explores the anatomy and physiology of neuron s that are part of sensory system s such as vision, hearing, and olfaction. Neurons in sensory regions of the brain respond to stimuli by firing one or more nerve impulses action potential s following stimulus presentation. How is information about the outside world encoded by the rate, timing, and pattern of action potentials? This so called neural code is currently unknown and sensory neuroscience plays an important role in the attempt to decipher it. Looking at early sensory processing is advantageous since brain regions that are higher up e.g. those involved in memory or emotion contain neurons which encode more abstract representations. However, the hope is that there are unifying principles which govern how the brain encodes and processes information. Studying sensory systems is an important stepping stone in our understanding of brain function in general. In ancient Egypt , from the late Middle Kingdom of Egypt Middle Kingdom onwards, in preparation for mummification, the brain was regularly removed, for it was the heart that was assumed to be the seat of intelligence. According to Herodotus , during the first step of mummification The most perfect practice is to extract as much of the brain as possible with an iron hook, and what the hook cannot reach is mixed with drugs. Over the next five thousand years, this view came to be reversed the brain is now known to be the seat of intelligence, although colloquial variations of the former remain as in memorizing something by heart . About salience in cognitive neuroscience Salience disambiguation Salience No footnotes date May 2010 The salience also called saliency of an item be it an object, a person, a pixel, etc is the state or quality by which it stands out relative to its neighbours. Saliency detection is considered to be a key attention al mechanism that facilitates learning and survival by enabling organisms to focus their limited perception perceptual and cognitive resources on the most pertinent subset of the available wikt sensation sensory data . Saliency typically arises from contrasts between items and their neighborhood, such as a red dot surrounded by white dots, a flickering message indicator of an answering machine, or a loud noise in an otherwise quiet environment. Saliency detection is often studied in the context of the visual perception visual system, but similar mechanisms operate in other sensory systems. When attention deployment is driven by salient stimuli, it is considered to be bottom up, memory free, and reactive. Attention can also be guided by top down , memory dependent, or anticipatory mechanisms, such as when looking ahead of moving objects or sideways before crossing streets. Humans and other animals cannot pay attention to more than one or very few items simultaneously, so they are faced with the challenge of continuously integrating and prioritizing different bottom up and top down influences. Neuroanatomy of salience The hippocampus participates in the assessment of salience and context using past memories to filter new incoming stimulus placing those that are most important into the long term memory. The entorhinal cortex is the pathway into and out of the hippocampus and is damaged early on in Alzheimer s disease .
