  1. Nonsense syllable

In cognitive psychology, a nonsense syllable is a word like string of letters that is not intended to have any established meaning it is a special case of a non lexical vocable . Nonsense syllables have been extensively used in experimental psychology , especially the psychology of learning and memory . Nonsense syllables were first introduced by Hermann Ebbinghaus ref Ebbinghaus, H. 1964 . Memory . New York Dover. Originally published 1885. ref in his experiments on the learning of lists. His intention was that they would form a standard stimulus so that experiments would be reproducible. However, with increasing use it became apparent that different nonsense syllables were learned at very different rates, even when they had the same superficial structure. Glaze ref Glaze, J. A. 1928 . The association value of non sense syllables. Pedagogical Seminary and Journal of Genetic Psychology, 35 , 255 269. ref introduced the concept of association value to describe these differences, which turned out to be reliable between people and situations. Since Glaze s time, experiments using nonsense syllables typically control association value in order to reduce variability in results between stimuli. Nonsense syllables can vary in structure. The most used are the so called CVC syllables, composed of a consonant, a vowel, and a consonant these have the advantage that they are all pronouncable or nearly all, depending on how you feel about pronouncing, say, XUQ . They are often described as CVC trigram s , reflecting their three letter structure. Obviously many other structures are possible, and can be described on the same principles, e.g. VC, VCV, CVCV. But the CVC trigrams have been studied most intensively for example, Glaze determined association values for 2019 of them. The term nonsense syllable is widely used to describe non lexical vocables in music non lexical vocables used in music , most notably in scat singing but also in many other forms of vocal music. Image Fleurgivre 1.jpg thumb Soft rime Soft rime is a white ice deposition that forms when the water drop liquid droplet s in light freezing fog or mist freeze to the outer surfaces of objects, with calm or light wind. The fog freezes usually to the windward side of tree branches, wires, or any other solid objects. Soft rime is similar in appearance to frost hoar frost but whereas rime is formed by vapour first condensation condensing to liquid droplets of fog, mist or cloud and then attaching to a surface, hoar frost is formed by direct deposition from water vapour to solid ice. A heavy coating of hoar frost, called white frost , is very similar in appearance to soft rime, but the formation process is different it happens when there is no fog, but very high levels of air relative humidity above 90 and temperature s below 8  C 18  F . Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Factors that favour soft rime are small drop size, slow accretion of liquid water, high degree of supercooling, and fast dissipation of latent heat of fusion. The opposite conditions favour ice with higher densities, such as hard rime or clear ice . Jilin City Rime is regarded as one of the China Four Natural Wonders. 1. Syllable stress of Botanical Latin

main Traditional English pronunciation of Latin Syllable stress of botanical names Suggested move title, as syllable stress of classical botanical names is simply syllable stress of classical Latin varies with the language spoken by the person using the botanical name. In English speaking countries the Botanical Latin places syllable stress for botanical names derived from ancient Greek and Latin broadly according to two systems, either the Reformed academic pronunciation , or the pronunciation developed initially in some large part by United Kingdom British gardeners, horticulturists, naturalists, and botanists of the 19th century. Clarify me post text What is the difference between these two systems? date March 2009 What follow are the rules of stress of reformed academic pronunciation of Latin intended to approximate the stress rules of ancient spoken Latin . Words of Greek origin are generally pronounced according to the same rules native ancient Greek rules of stress are not used. Generally in Latin each vowel or diphthong belongs to a single syllable. Classical Latin diphthongs are ae, au, oe. Diphthongs from Greek can include oi, eu, ei, and ou, and ui also occasionally occurs in botanical Latin. Syllables end in vowels, unless there are multiple consonants, in which case the consonants are divided between the two syllables, with certain consonants being treated as pairs. In words of two syllables the stress is on the first syllable. Words that contain three or more syllables have stresses accorded to their syllables by the quality and location of the different vowels in the words.
