Surveyor is a Didone classification digital serif typeface designed by Tobias Frere Jones in 2001 as a custom typeface for use in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Martha Stewart Living magazine. Surveyor recalls type found on maps and charts, labeling geographic features. Surveyor has a vertical axis and a high contrast of stroke weight similar to Bodoni or Didot but a less strident, more organic, structure recalling early nineteenth century faces like Bell typeface Bell , Scotch Roman, and Thorowgood. The italics have a slightly more extreme forward slant than is common, curved strokes often terminate in a ball, and several of the uppercase characters, A, K, N, and T have a swash stroke. Much of the material on the earliest stages in the development of the hodometer are adequately covered in odometer . In the 17th century, the surveyor s wheel was re introduced and used to measure distances. A single wheel is attached to a handle and the device can be pushed or pulled along by a person walking. The Surveyor to the Navy was a civilian officer in the Royal Navy . He was a member of the Navy Board from the inauguration of that body in 1546, and held overall responsibility for the design of British warships, although until 1745 the actual design work for warships built at each Royal Dockyard was primarily the responsibility of the individual Shipwright Master Shipwright at that Royal Dockyard. For vessels built by commercial contract limied to wartime periods, when the Royal Dockyards could not cope with the volume of work , the Surveyor s office drew the designs to which the private shipbuilders were required to build the vessels. From 1745 design responsibility was centred in the Surveyor s office, with the Master Shipwrights in the Dockyard responsible for implementation. In 1859 the post of Surveyor of the Navy was changed to Third Sea Lord Controller of the Navy .
