A shear load is a force that tends to produce a sliding failure on a material along a plane that is parallel to the direction of the force. When a paper is cut with scissors, the paper fails in shear. In structural engineering structural and mechanical engineering the shear strength of a component is important for designing the dimensions and materials to be used for the manufacture construction of the component wiktionary e.g. e.g. beam structure beams , Plate structures plates , or Screw bolts In a reinforced concrete beam, the main purpose of rebar stirrups is to increase the shear strength. Wet strength is routinely expressed as the ratio of wet to dry Tensile strength tensile force at break. Mechanism The cellulose fibreweb of paper is mainly held together by hydrogen bonds . These are dependent on physical contact between the fibres and can be broken by wetting of the fibres. The residual strength of a wetted paper is less than 10 ref name wet . Various techniques, such as refining of the pulp paper pulp and wet pressing on the paper machine can be used to mechanically somewhat reduce the strength loss of the paper upon wetting. To improve the wet strength it is common to use chemicals. The use of chemicals can retain as much as 10 30 of the original dry strength of the paper ref name wet . The wet strength chemicals improves the dry strength as well. Wet strength chemicals See also Sizing Wet strength chemicals improve the tensile properties of the paper both in wet and dry state by crosslinking the pulp paper cellulose fibres with covalent bonds that do not break upon wetting. Different wet strength chemicals are in use, like wet strength resins or neutral sizing agents . Normal wet strength resins are urea formaldehyde UF , melamine resin melamine formaldehyde MF and polyamide epichlorohydrin PEA . of compressive and tensile strengths An example of a material with a much higher compressive strength than tensile strength is concrete. Ceramics typically have a much higher compressive strength than tensile strength. Composite materials tend to have higher tensile strengths than compressive strengths ...Compressive strength is the capacity of a material or structure to withstand axially directed pushing forces. When the limit of compressive strength is reached, materials are crushed.
