  1. Strand Underpass

unreferenced date June 2007 Image Strand underpass london 800.jpg thumb Entrance to the underpass from Waterloo Bridge The Strand Underpass sometimes incorrectly Citation needed date February 2011 called the Kingsway Underpass is a vehicle tunnel in central London connecting Waterloo Bridge to Kingsway near Holborn . It was built by Mowlem John Mowlem & Co and opened on 21 January 1964. It is built within part of the former Kingsway tramway subway . The original tramway tunnel was 20  ft 6.6  metre m wide and allowed bi directional flow because of the fixed rails and relatively narrow width of the trams however, the new road tunnel was only 17  ft 6.25  m wide, and consequently only northbound traffic was permitted, because of the side clearances required. The headroom is only 12  ft  6  in  3.75  m due to the tunnel having to pass beneath the bridge abutment by means of a 1 12 gradient . An electronic eye alerts drivers of tall vehicles and diverts them to an escape route to the left of the entrance. However, high vehicles do still try to go through and so get stuck occasionally. Underground, the new underpass is constructed in a concrete box within the former tram tunnel the road surface, however, is at the original track level. At the northern end of the tunnel, the road rises to the surface on a new carriageway supported by metal pillars. This passes through the site of the former Aldwych tramway station , but because of the greater width requirement, 27 trees and some pavement had to be removed for it to be constructed. The tunnel is used by the London Buses route 521 521 bus route on Northbound journeys. When referring to Transcription genetics DNA transcription , the coding strand is the DNA strand which has the same Nucleobase base sequence as the RNA transcript produced although with thymine replaced by uracil . 1. Sense strand

Mergeto Sense molecular biology date July 2009 In genetics , the sense strand is complementary to the antisense strand or nonsense strand . The antisense strand is the strand of DNA transcribed into mRNA during transcription genetics transcription . The immediate product of this transcription is called an initial RNA transcript, which is the same as the sense strand except the nucleotides are RNA instead of DNA, and the base uracil is substituted for thymine. This initial RNA transcript undergoes intron deletion prior to translation. The intron deletion process is called RNA splicing splicing . Each splicing event removes a piece of RNA and rejoins the adjacent ends immediately. The end product is called mRNA and is co linear with the sense strand of DNA. That is, even though an mRNA has parts missing compared to the sense strand DNA, no part of an mRNA has flipped its head tail orientation. Strictly speaking, only the mRNA makes sense with the genetic code as the translated protein peptide sequence can be directly inferred from this strand. The sense strand DNA however, has a lot of garbage stuffed in between genetic codes. This is true in most eukaryotic genes. Prokaryotes usually don t have garbage in their sense strand DNA. The anti sense strand is complementary to the sense and is the actual template for mRNA synthesis. Knowing the difference between the sense and anti sense strands is important in certain molecular biology applications. For example, in microarray expression technologies, it is important to know which strand is viewed on the array. An array can correspond to either strand however, a single array will be made entirely of sense or anti sense strands. Identifying the different strands is also important in understanding small interfering RNA s, or siRNA. References Merrill, Dr. Gary F.
