  1. Straight photography

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Pure photography refers to photography that attempts to depict a scene as Realism visual arts realistically and Objectivity science objectively as permitted by the medium, renouncing the use of photo manipulation manipulation . Founded in 1932, Group f 64 who championed purist photography, had this to say Pure photography is defined as possessing no qualities of technique, composition or idea, derivative of any other art form. The term emerged in the 1880s to mean simply an unmanipulated photographic print, in opposition to the composite prints of Henry Peach Robinson or the soft focus painterly images of some pictorialist photographers. At first, straight photography was a viable choice within pictorialism, as, for example, the work of Henry Frederick Evans. Paul Strand s 1917 characterization of his work as absolute unqualified objectivity described a change in the meaning of the term. It came to imply a specific aesthetic typified by higher contrast, sharper focus, aversion to cropping, and emphasis on the underlying abstract geometric structure of subjects. Some photographers began to identify these formal elements as a language for translating metaphysical or spiritual dimensions into visual terms. This emphasis on the unmanipulated silver print dominated modernist photographic aesthetics into the 1970s. 1. Vernacular photography

Unreferenced date March 2009 Image Family House 1969.jpg right 200px Vernacular photography or amateur photography refers to the creation of photographs by amateur or unknown photographers who take everyday life and common things as subjects. Though the more commonly known definition of the word vernacular is a quality of being indigenous or native, the use of the word in relation to art and architecture refers more to the meaning of the following subdefinition of vernacular architecture from The Oxford English Dictionary concerned with ordinary domestic and functional buildings rather than the essentially monumental. Examples of vernacular photographs include travel and vacation photos, family snapshots, photos of friends, class portraits, identification photographs, and photo booth images. Vernacular photographs are types of accidental art, in that they often are unintentionally artistic. Closely related to vernacular photography is found photography , which in one sense refers to the recovery of a lost, unclaimed, or discarded vernacular photograph or snapshot. Found photos are often found at flea markets, thrift and secondhand stores, yard sales, estate and tag sales, in dumpsters and trash cans, between the pages of books, or on streets and sidewalks. The use of vernacular photography in the arts is almost as old as photography itself. Vernacular photography has become far more commonplace in recent years as an art technique and is now a widely accepted genre of art photography. 1. Found photography

Found photography is a genre of photography and or visual art based on the recovery and possible exhibition of lost, unclaimed, or discarded photographs. It is related to vernacular photography , but differs in the fact that the presenter or exhibitor of the photographs did not shoot the photograph itself, does not know anything about the photographer, and generally does not know anything about the subject s of the photographs. Found photos are generally acquired at flea markets, thrift stores, yard sales, estate sales, or literally just found anywhere. The appreciation and interest of the genre is also related to the concept of found art or readymades a concept which was popularized by Marcel Duchamp and subsequent Dadaists and conceptual art ists. Much of the appeal of the photos is the mystery regarding the original photographer or the subject matter and can also involve a sort of voyeur istic interest, as if one were obtaining access to a private world. Creating possible narrative s for found photographs has become quite popular, especially on sites which allow viewers to enter their own narratives as comments to the pictures. Contemporary artists who use found photography as part of their practice include Stephen Bull, Hans Peter Feldmann, Alexander Honory, Erik Kessels, Peter Piller and Joachim Schmid. 1. Triennial of Photography

Orphan date February 2009 Refimprove date August 2007 The Triennial of Photography Hamburg originated as an initiative of the photographer and collector F.C. Gundlach , with the support of the directors of Hamburg s major museums. Every third year since 1999 a festival of photography has taken place in and around Hamburg, for which the cooperation of cultural institutions is crucial. The internationally unique joint venture of ten of the city s major museums and cultural institutions also encouraged many art galleries and other organizations to open their premises to photography. Meanwhile, the Triennial of Photography Hamburg has become an important festival of international reputation. In 2005, 83 museums, galleries, and other organizations with 114 photo exhibitions took part in the 3rd Triennial of Photography that was visited by 260,000 guests. Besides a great variety of exhibitions presenting the whole range of photographic techniques and styles, the festival was complemented by symposia, lectures, and conferences. The 4th Triennial of Photography Hamburg takes place from the 11th to the 20th of April 2008.
