On a cursory view of the exterior, it is typical of much of the architecture built in the post war reconstruction period in London around the Festival of Britain . There was a steel shortage at the time, so concrete was used for the roof structure instead of the steel girder structure which had previously been the norm. At Stockwell the opportunity was taken to create a bravura piece of reinforced concrete design. The convert 393 ft m abbr on long roof structure is supported by ten very shallow two hinged arched ribs. Each is convert 7 ft m abbr on deep at the centre of the arch, convert 10 ft 6 in m abbr on at the end, and spans convert 194 ft m abbr on Cantilevered barrel vaults between, topped by large skylights, span the convert 42 ft m abbr on between each pair of ribs. The vaults are crossed by smaller ribs to prevent torsion. Seen from the outside, the main arches are visible as outward leaning buttresses, with a segmental curve to each bay forming a flowing roof line. The garage provides convert 73350 sqft m2 abbr on of unobstructed parking space and could originally house 200 buses. At the time of construction it was the largest unsupported area under one roof in Europe. Since 1988 the garage has been a Grade II listed building reflecting its importance in post war architectural and engineering history. Professor Anthony John Tony Stockwell is a United Kingdom British Academia academic . He is considered to be one of the UK s leading researchers into the history of British imperialism and decolonisation in Southeast Asia . In 1989, he became joint editor of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History . In 2002, he became Chairman of the Friends of The National Archives UK The National Archives . Stockwell was appointed to the History Department at Royal Holloway, University of London RHUL in 1972. In 1996, he was promoted to Professor of Imperial and Commonwealth History. Stockwell Skatepark also known as Brixton Bowls or Brixton Beach is situated on Stockwell Park Walk in South London , England . Unsupervised and free at all hours, the skatepark was built in the 1970s and has been used since then by skateboarders and practitioners of other extreme sports such as BMX . The park remains popular and has been skated by the likes of Bam Margera , John Cardiel and Jason Lee actor Jason Lee and the Stereo Sound Agency History In September 2005 the park was resurfaced. The new surface has already cracked and become dangerous in certain places. Users of the park were angry with the council for employing inexperienced contractors who had no experience in the skatepark building field. Some of the wooden local built ramps were then removed by the council after the fatal injury of a visiting skateboarder. The injury was not incurred on or near the local built ramps but, it is believed, the council felt the need to be extra careful, fearing the possibility of litigation in the eventuality of other injuries. Following the appalling resurfacing job carried out in 2005, users of the park have successfully campaigned for a further resurfacing. This was carried out between September 2007 and October 2008 this time with experts involved and a number of local skaters and BMXers helping out . The new surface is accompanied by a number of transition with coping ramp additions, most notably in the north east corner of the park, previously an empty space on the left in the photo below . The skateboarding and BMX scene is very friendly and locals use the park as a place to hang out and socialise as well as ride the Inclined plane ramp s.
