Bache s Dark Night, Early Dawn Steps to an Ecology of the Mind ...nofootnotes date January 2011 Transpersonal ecology is largely associated with Warwick Fox , although the work of some other people, such as Rupert Sheldrake and James Lovelock , has some relevance to the field. The contributions of Fox emphasise the importance of experience of nature for an understanding of eco philosophy. His work shows the influence of Arne Naess . The contributions of Fox to the field are evident in Fox 1990 , in an article in which Fox deals with questions of values and nature. This approach to transpersonal ecology met with criticism by Stavely and McNamara 1992 , who questioned whether greater respect for nature will necessarily result from cosmological or transpersonal identification with nature, as Fox assumed. Although since the early articles in Journal of Transpersonal Psychology on this field, few articles appeared on this field in Journal of Transpersonal Psychology for the next decade 1992 to 2002 , there are signs that there have been recent revivals of interest in this field. The Steps, which are constructed of stone and concrete, transcend a steep escarpment marking an ancient shoreline. The Steps are named after a former landowner of the area. They are named after Robert Baldwin , a former premier of Ontario , whose family were the first landowners. The Steps are also famous for appearing in the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and its film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World . History The Steps are located on the shorecliff of the ancient Glacial Lake Iroquois Lake Iroquois on a public right of way connecting two sections of Spadina Road . The sheerness of the cliff prevented the construction of Spadina Road directly down the escarpment. Instead a roadway crossing of the escarpment was cut a few hundred yards to the west. A set of wooden steps were installed to allow people to move through the area. The original wooden stairs were replaced with a permanent structure in 1913. Along the top of the cliff some of Toronto s most exclusive homes were constructed including Casa Loma and Spadina House . In the 1960s the proposed Spadina Expressway would have replaced the stairs site with a six lane highway exiting from a tunnel to the north. The Expressway project was cancelled in 1971 by the Ontario government .... In 1984, the land was leased to the City of Toronto for 99 years. Moki steps , sometimes spelled alternately as Moqui steps, are a recurring feature found in areas of the American southwest previously inhabited by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples and other related cultures. The steps consist of alternating hand and toe holds carved into vertical or near vertical sandstone surfaces. The steps are usually two to three inches deep, and three to four inches in width and height. Location and Use Moki steps are often found near cliff dwelling s and water sources. They may have allowed relatively quick access to difficult to reach areas such as slot canyon s, look out positions, and granaries. In some cases, Moki steps are thought to have provided access to fertile canyon bottoms from more defensible dwellings on or above surrounding cliffs. The steps may have been used in conjunction with handmade ropes. ref http books.google.com books?id x9fZrykn2 YC Canyoneering, by John Annerino ref Similar sets of depressions may have been carved by non indigenous settlers or explorers.
