orphan date June 2010 The Old SpanishTreasure Cave is located on Hwy 59 between Sulphur Springs, Benton County, Arkansas Sulphur Springs and Gravette, Arkansas in the northwest corner of the state. Legend Over 350 years ago, Spanish Conquistadors traveled north through the wilderness to find the Seven Cities of Gold myth Seven Cities of Cibola , a treasure of gold. Though Francisco V squez de Coronado Coronado went back to Mexico empty handed, it is believed that some of the Spaniards found treasure, and hid it in the cave before Indians killed them. The cave was sealed up until it was re discovered in 1885 by an old Spaniard from Madrid. The legend apparently led him to two maps one on a tree, and another on a rock. Neither these maps nor the treasure, estimated today at 40 million dollars, have ever been found. There have been other intriguing things found in the area, such as helmets, pieces of armor, and weapons from the period. A few gold coins had also been reported. The Spaniard did not stay long, due to ill health. The Search Goes On The legend was kept alive by George Dunbar, who continued searching for the treasure for many years. He, too, had to give up the search due to ill health. The cave was finally opened to the public in the 1930s after several other failed attempts to find the treasure. The hunt still goes on today. The cave has never been fully explored, and new territories are charted every year. The Old SpanishTreasure Cave is still open to the public, offering guided tours throughout the year. Panning for gem stones, crystals and fossils is another activity offered at this attraction. The cave stays at a constant 56 degrees year round. The Treasure of the Llanganatis refers to a huge sum of worked gold and other treasures supposedly hidden deep within the Llanganates National Park Llanganatis mountain range of Ecuador by the Inca general Rumi ahui Inca warrior Rumi ahui . In 1532 Francisco Pizarro founded the town of San Miguel de Piura and began the Spanish conquest of Peru conquest of the Inca Empire . Later in the same year, he captured the Inca king Atahualpa at Cajamarca . Atahualpa, seeing that the Spaniards cherished gold above all, promised to fill a The Ransom Room room with gold in exchange for his freedom. Pizarro agreed to do this, although he likely had no intention to ever let Atahualpa leave. Before the room could be filled with gold, Pizarro s distrust of Atahualpa, and his influence over the many remaining Inca warriors, caused him to have the Inca Garrote garroted on July 26, 1533. The legend holds that the Inca general Rumi ahui was on his way to Cajamarca with an enormous amount of worked gold for the ransom when he learned that Atahualpa had been murdered. The amount of gold varies with different versions of the legend, but all agree that on the news of Atahualpa s death, he returned to Quito and hauled the treasure up into the Llanganatis mountains. There he hid it, either in a cave, or by throwing it into a lake. Rumi ahui continued fighting against the Spanish, and though he was eventually captured and tortured, he never revealed the location of the treasure.
