The post is held in conjunction with the Governor of the Falkland Islands Governorship of the Falkland Islands . The post was created in 1985 when South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands was split from the Falkland Islands Dependencies to create a new overseas territory. As the territory has no native inhabitants, and the only population is the visiting military garrisons, and scientists from the British Antarctic Survey , there was no appointment of a Governor . Instead the post of Commissioner was created, the normal practice for uninhabited territory. The post was to be held by whoever was the current Governor of the Falkland Islands , as that is the nearest inhabited overseas territory to SGSSI, and the presence of the Royal Navy in the South Atlantic allows the Commissioner to be transported to the territory relatively quickly if necessary. The Commissioner retains the same powers as a Governor, and is responsible for domestic affairs within the territory.     Politics of the United Kingdom The foreign relations of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are managed by the UK Foreign Office . There is no native population on any of the islands, and the only inhabitants are the British Government Officer, scientists, and support staff from the British Antarctic Survey who maintain scientific bases at Bird Island, South Georgia Bird Island and at the capital, King Edward Point , as well as museum staff at nearby Grytviken . Consequently, there is no legislative council and no elections are held within this British Overseas Territory territory . Territorial dispute Argentina claimed South Georgia in 1927 and the South Sandwich Islands in 1938. From 1905 the Argentine Meteorological Office cooperated in maintaining the meteorological observatory at Grytviken under the British Leasing lease requirements of the whaling station until these changed in 1949. Argentina maintained a naval station, Corbeta Uruguay on Thule Island in the South Sandwich Islands from 1976 until 1982 when it was closed by the United Kingdom, and briefly occupied South Georgia in 1982. The Argentine claim over SGSSI contributed to the 1982 Falklands War and remains unresolved to this day. The trench is produced by the subduction of the southernmost portion of the South American Plate beneath the small South Sandwich Plate . The South Sandwich Islands constitute a volcanic island arc which results from this active subduction. Mount Belinda on Montagu Island is an active volcano . It is the deepest oceanic trench trench of the Southern Atlantic Ocean, and the second deepest of the Atlantic Ocean , after the Puerto Rico Trench .
