    The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers AIME is a professional body for mining and metallurgy , with 90,000 members. It was founded in 1871 by 22 mining engineers in Wilkes Barre , Pennsylvania , United States , being one of the first national engineering societies in the country. Its charter is to advance and disseminate, through the programs of the Member Societies, knowledge of engineering and the arts and sciences involved in the production and use of minerals, metals, energy sources and materials for the benefit of humankind. It is the original parent organization of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration SME , The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society TMS , the Association for Iron and Steel Technology AIST , and the Society of Petroleum Engineers . Year 1915 Still known by the original name American Institute of Mining Engineers it had a membership at the beginning of 1915 of over 5,000 made up of honorary, elected, and associate members.     POV check date December 2007 National Society of Black Engineers NSBE , founded in 1975 at Purdue University , is one of the largest student run organizations in the US, centered on improving the recruitment and wikt retention retention of African American engineering students. History In 1971, Edward Barnette and Fred Cooper engineer Fred Cooper approached the dean of engineering at Purdue University with the concept of starting the Black Society of Engineers BSE . They wanted to establish a student organization to help improve the recruitment and retention of black engineering students. In the late 1960s, 80 percent of the black freshmen entering the engineering program dropped out. The dean agreed to the idea and assigned the only black faculty member on staff, Arthur J. Bond , as an adviser. Barnette served as the first president of the BSE. The fledgling group gained momentum in 1974, with the direction and encouragement of Bond and the active participation of a group of young men who become the founders of NSBE. Now known as the Chicago Six , these men were Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan, Jr., Edward A. Coleman, and George A. Smith. Encouraged ..., 1975. Harris also changed the organizations nomenclature from the BSE to the Society of Black Engineers SBE .
