Refimprove date December 2008 Reciprocity in socialpsychology refers to responding to a positive action with another positive action, and responding to a negative action with another negative one. Positive reciprocal actions differ from altruistic actions as those only follow from other positive actions and they differ from social gift giving in that those are not actions taken with the hope or expectation of future positive responses. Reciprocal actions are important to socialpsychology as they can help explain the maintenance of social norms . If a sufficient proportion of the population interprets the breaking of a social norm by another as a hostile action and if these people are willing to take potentially costly action to punish the rule breaker then this can maintain the norm in the absence of formal sanctions. The punishing action may range from negative words to complete social ostracism . In public good experiments, behavioral economists have demonstrated that the potential for reciprocal actions by players increases the rate of contribution to the public good, providing evidence for the importance of reciprocity in social situations. ref cite journal first Ernst last Fehr coauthors and Simon G chter year 2000 month Summer title Fairness and Retaliation The Economics of Reciprocity journal Journal of Economic Perspectives volume 14 issue 3 pages 159 181 id ISSN 0895 3309 doi 10.1257 jep.14.3.159 ref In mathematics , game theory describes reciprocity as a highly effective Tit for Tat strategy for the iterated prisoner s dilemma . Socialpsychology is a highly empirical field. Rather than seeking global theories of human behavior, as are frequently found in personality theory, social psychologists utilize a wide range of specific theories for various kinds of social and cognitive phenomena. Here is a sampling of some of the more influential theories that can be found in this branch of psychology. Attribution theory is concerned with the ways in which people explain or attribute the behavior of others. The theory divides the way people attribute causes to events into two types. External or situational attributions assign causality to an outside factor, such as the weather. Internal or dispositional attributions assign causality to factors within the person, such as ability or personality. Cognitive dissonance was originally based on the concept of cognitive consistency, but is now more related to self concept theory. When people do something that violates their view of themselves, this causes an uncomfortable state of dissonance that motivates a change in either attitudes or behavior Festinger, 1957 . orphan date August 2009 Reproductive value RV is a term used in socialpsychology to describe the level of attractiveness of women . The reproduction value theory introduces a mechanism that men unintentionally use when searching for a partner. The level of the RV is decided by several things, including Genetic information, i.e. what is the quality of the genotype presented by the potential partner? This is without doubt the most important factor in this theory Social status , i.e. what is the salary or social stability of the potential partner? Numerous other things, i.e. what are the acquired results or achievements of the potential partner? It is clear now that the higher the RV gets, the more attractive a woman is. One might wonder if women have a similar mechanism when selecting a man. Though a lot of research is currently in progress on this subject, the term resource acquisition ability is known as the sexual opposite of the RV. merge from T groups date May 2010 merge Encounter group discuss Talk T group socialpsychology date December 2008 A T group or training group sometimes also referred to as sensitivity training sensitivity training group , human relations training group or encounter group was pioneered in the mid 1940s by Kurt Lewin and his colleagues in what became The National Training Laboratory now known as NTL Institute www.ntl.org as a method of learning about human behavior. First conceived as a research technique, the t group later became a new type of pedagogy. According to its founders, in T groups, participants themselves typically, between 8 and 15 people learn about themselves and about small group processes in general through their interaction with each other. A T group meeting does not have an explicit agenda, structure or express goal. Under the guidance of a facilitator, the participants are encouraged to share with the group their emotional reactions such as, for example, anger, fear, warmth or envy which arise in response to their fellow participants actions and statements. The emphasis is on sharing emotions, as opposed to judgments or conclusions. In this way, T group participants can learn how their words and actions trigger emotional responses in the people they communicate with. Many varieties of T groups have existed, from the initial T groups focused on small group dynamics to those which aim more explicitly to develop self understanding and interpersonal communication. T groups were also of wide use in industry, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, and in many ways were predecessors of current team building and corporate culture initiatives.
