seealso Plimsoll shoe File PF Flyers Center High Re Issue sneakers black.jpg thumb A pair of sneakers The United States American term sneakers is a synonym for athletic shoe s. More specifically, sneakers refer to footwear made of flexible material, typically featuring a sole made of rubber and an upper part made of leather or canvas . Sneakers were originally sporting apparel, but are today worn much more widely as casual footwear. They are now widely popular. Many children choose to wear sneakers to school because of their comfort and versatility. Sneaker can also refer to an athletic shoe such as basketball shoes, tennis shoes or cross trainers. These shoes are sport specific shoes worn for various sports. The British English equivalent of sneaker is trainer in its modern meaning however, the traditional sneaker pictured is closer to the British plimsoll shoe plimsoll . In some urban areas in the United States , the slang for sneakers is kicks . In Hiberno English and Australian English the term is runners . In South African English the term used is tekkies . Sneakers have become an important part of hip hop culture since the 1970s. Presently, numerous rappers sign million dollar deals with major brands such as Nike, Adidas or Puma to promote their shoes. Sneaker collectors, called Sneakerhead s , use sneakers as fashionable items. Artistically modified sneakers can sell for upwards of 500. Etymology In the 1800s, a London police officer developed a rubber soled shoe in order to catch criminals in the act quietly. He called his invention sneakers . The name derived from the fact that the rubber soles of the shoes made them noiseless. ref OEtymD sneaker accessdate 2010 04 19 ref The term sneaker was also used in 1887 by Boston Journal of Education ref cite news title Keds ... to tennis shoes sneakers. blockquote The British English term trainer is a slang abbreviation of training ... de Sneaker no Sneakers pl Trampki tr Sneaker ... more details

Description The premise of Sneakers is similar to Space Invaders or Sirius s Space Eggs to use either paddle game controller paddles or the keyboard to move a ship left or right across the bottom of the screen while shooting or evading enemies. If an enemy destroys the ship, a much larger mothership will descend and put a new one into play. The player begins with four ships in reserve and receives an additional one for each level completed. There are eight kinds of enemy the player must face, each of which attacks in a wave of its own with a unique strategy. After completing all eight waves, play proceeds to the next level in which the same enemies attack again, but in greater numbers or more challenging ways. At the end of level 5 the player returns to level 5. A starting level from 1 through 5 may be chosen with Control R. Wave 1 Sneakers br The first wave pits the player against the innocuous Sneakers , smiling, white legged creatures that fly randomly around the screen. If one collides with the ship it will destroy it, but otherwise they do not pursue or fire upon it.
