  1. Slit drum

Mergefrom Slit gong date April 2010 A slit drum is a hollow percussion instrument , usually of bamboo or wood, which is made more resonant through one or more slits in it. Most slit drums have three slits, cut into the shape of an H . If, as is usual, the resultant tongues are different lengths or thicknesses, the drum will produce two different Pitch music pitches . The ends of a slit drum are closed so that the shell becomes the resonating chamber for the sound oscillation vibrations created when the tongues are struck, usually with a mallet. The resonating chamber increases the volume of the sound produced by the tongue and presents the sound through an open port. If the resonating chamber is the correct size for the pitch being produced by the tongue, which means it has the correct volume ... 1. Slit gong

Merge to Slit drum date April 2010 Refimprove date December 2009 Image TamTam.jpg thumb right 225px Bamileke drummers in Cameroon s West Province Cameroon West Province . A Slit gong , sometimes also called slit drum , is a log drum used throughout Africa , Southeast Asia , and Oceania . It is usually called a boungu in Africa. A whole log is hollowed out through a narrow slit running the length of the log. Slit gong players use padded sticks to produce a range of penetrating musical notes, depending on where and how the gong is struck. The gong may be carved into various pleasing or significant shapes. Slit gongs are considered to be part of the drum family. In most instruments, the wood on the two sides of the slit is of different thickness, resulting in tones of different pitch. They can therefore be used to imitate the tonal patterns found in tonal languages . Instruments with two slits like the ones shown on the picture can thus have up to four different pitches. Some early European explorers claim to have seen lime green versions of these instruments though this has not yet been proven. Slit gongs, strategically situated for optimal acoustic transmission e.g. along a river or valley , have been used for long distance communication. ref Hart, Mickey p. 52 ref Notes Reflist References Hart, Mickey Planet Drum, A Celebration of Percussion and Rhythm New York HarperCollins 1991 . 1. Slit sensilla

The slit sensilla is a small mechanoreceptory organ in the exoskeleton of spider s which detects Deformation mechanics strain due to forces experienced by the animal. As the name indicates, a slit sensilla is a small groove in the exoskeleton which deforms under stress, and these deformations are detected by neurons. Slit semsillae may occur singly, in widely spaces groups of varying alignment, or in tightly clustered parallel groups, with the last being called a lyriform organ . 1. Slit (gene)

Slit refers collectively to a family of related genes which encode a corresponding set of secreted proteins, also collectively referred to as Slit. Slit proteins act as midline repellants, preventing the crossing of longitudinal axon s through the midline of the central nervous system of most bilaterian animal species, including mouse mice , chicken s, human s, insect s, nematode worms and planarian s. ref cite journal journal Cell year 1999 volume 96 issue 6 pages 795 806 title Slit Proteins Bind Robo Receptors and Have an Evolutionarily Conserved Role in Repulsive Axon Guidance author K. 1. Gill slit

unreferenced date August 2009 disputed date January 2009 expert subject Fishes date January 2009 Gill slits are individual openings to gills , i.e., multiple gill arches, which lack a single outer cover. Such gills are characteristic of Cartilaginous fish such as shark s, Batoidea rays , sawfish , and guitarfish . Most of these have five pairs, but a few species have 6 or 7 pairs. The anterior edge of a gill slit is motile, moving outward to allow water to exit, but closing to prevent reverse flow. In contrast, Bony fishes have a single outer bony gill covering called an Operculum fish operculum . The term gill slits has also been used to refer to the folds of skin in the pharyngeal region in embryos. The true gill slits in embryonic fish develop into gills. However, the slits in vertebrate do not, so a better modifier for the vertebral structures is pharyngeal , as in pharyngeal slits and pharyngeal arches. In the 19th century, pharyngeal slits of vertebrate embryos were erroneously thought to be actual gills or precursor slits to gills, so thought then to be support for the recapitulation theory . These pharyngeal arch s exist in all vertebrates at some time in their embryo stage in mammal s, bird s, and reptile s , and develop into a number of permanent structures in and away from the throat area and the bones in the ear. When the vertebrate reaches a certain point in its life the arches fuse together and form other structures such as the trachea and ear bones, and contribute to major blood vessels. Both specimens were smoked out of a Baobab tree in a national park in southern Mozambique . Virtually nothing is known about this species. N. vinsoni was once considered a synonym of Nycteris macrotis , but it became recognized as a separate species in 2004. Some, however, still consider N. vinsoni to be a subspecies of N. macrotis . Others believe the correct name for the species should be N. aetheopica .
