Unreferenced date December 2009 Slip ratio is a means of calculating and expressing the locking status of a wheel and is vital to the effectiveness of any anti lock braking system . When a vehicle is being driven along a road in a straight line its wheels rotate at virtually identical speeds. The vehicle s body also travels along the road at this same speed. When the driver applies the brakes in order to slow the vehicle, the speed of the wheels becomes slightly slower than the speed of the body, which is travelling along under its own inertia . This difference in speed is expressed as a percentage, and is called slip ratio . The ideal slip ratio for maximum deceleration is 10 to 30 . General forms Slip joints can be designed to allow continuous relative motion of two components or it can allow an adjustment from one temporarily fixed position to another. Examples of the latter are Tripod photography tripod s, hiking pole s, or similar Telescoping mechanics telescoping device. The position is fixed using a clamping mechanism based on a cam , a set screw or similar locking mechanism. Slip joints can also be non telescoping, such as the joints on some older wooden surveyor s levelling rod s. These use a joint that keeps the sections offset from each other but able to be slid together for transport. Examples of continuous slip joints are given below. Special purpose slip joints Civil EngineeringSlip joints in large structures are used to allow independent motion of large components while enabling them to be joined in some way. For example, if two tall buildings are to be joined with a pedestrian skyway at some high level, there are two options in structural engineering. If the buildings are identical in mass and elasticity they will tend to respond similarly to ground motion induced by earthquake s. In this case it may be appropriate to construct a rigid connection between the buildings, although this may require additional supporting members within the structures. On the other hand, a lower cost connection may be made by using a lightweight structure that is not coupled rigidly but instead which is allowed to slide or float relative to one or both structures ... The slip jig is in 9 8 time signature time , traditionally with accents on 5 of the 9 beats two pairs of crotchet quaver quarter note eighth note followed by a Dotted note dotted crotchet note . The slip jig is one the four most common Irish stepdance s, the others being the reel dance reel , the jig and the hornpipe . It is danced in soft shoes. At one time only men danced it, then for several decades only women, and today slip jigs can be danced by any dancer, though at a competitive level they are almost exclusively danced by women. This dance is graceful and controlled, with heels very high, often called the ballet of Irish dance . There are also traditional Irish C ilidh c il dances which are slip jigs, though these are much less common than reels and double jigs. Because of its timing, the slip jig is longer than the reel for the same number of bars of music. In Irish stepdance competition, the tempo of 113 beats per minute is the same as other dances, but as each bar is longer, instead of dancing to 48 bars of music the dancer is only required to dance 40 bars of music each of 2 frac 1 2 steps . Stepdance judges prefer sliding motions with the feet and graceful movements that seem to slip across the floor. Slip jig timing can also be used for strip the willow dances in c ilidh folk dance , although the fact that most social dancers do not dance the step limits its use in set dance and ceili dance socially. Tort law Slip and fall , in United States tort law , is a claim or case based on a person slipping or tripping and falling. It is a tort , and based on a claim that the property owner was negligence negligent in allowing some dangerous condition to exist that caused the slip or trip. Property owners generally have two basic defenses to Public liability slip and fall claims The first defense is that they were not negligent. For example, the owner may claim that the banana that a patron slipped upon had been dropped on the floor only moments ago by another patron, and that, in the exercise of due diligence , a typical store owner acting with reasonable care would not have had time to discover the danger and take steps to mitigate the danger. The second and more typical defense is that the person who was injured was at fault. For example, the owner may claim that any reasonable patron, exercising due diligence for his or her own safety, would see a banana on the floor, and take those steps necessary to avoid slipping on it. The Commercial Slip formed one boundary of Buffalo s infamous Canal Street Buffalo Canal District , and was filled in when the district was marked for urban renewal in the 1950s. By that time, the New York State Thruway New York State Thruway and the Skyway had been built over the Canal district, and the Commercial Slip was buried and forgotten. In the late 1990s, public authorities began showing an interest in reviving Buffalo s Erie Canal heritage. Initially, plans called for re creating some buried elements of the Canal. However a public outcry, with pressure from citizens groups and the local media, convinced the planners to excavate and restore actual portions of the district, including the Commercial Slip. Orphan date September 2008 Unreferenced date January 2007 Collins Slip is a blanket term used in pharmacies to describe a slip and or note placed in prescription bags to ensure important notes and instructions are followed. Generally, Collins Slips are used to denote mixing of reconstitutables, verification of patient information, medications located separate from the bag, and so on. The name Collins Slip comes from a filling incident that took place at a small, independently owned pharmacy in a suburb of Akron, Ohio in 1983. The pharmacist on duty also the owner of the store , mistakenly dispensed reconstitutable penicillin to a patient s father without first adding water. When the father returned home, he realized the error, and instead of taking the medication back to the pharmacy, reconstituted the drug himself. Unfortunately, he diluted the medicine to such a degree that the child s infection was not treated, and in fact spread, leading the child s eventual death. The boy, Jefferson Collins, was six at the time. Shortly thereafter, the pharmacist s technician struck upon the idea of sliding pieces of paper or cardboard into the prescription bags. On each end of the slip, and on both sides, were generic notes instructions that would help avoid similar incidents. The technician named it the Collins Slip after the boy who died.
