  1. Ski Lift International

Ski Lift International was an aerial lift manufacturer based out of Incline Village, Nevada . SLI was established by co founders Samuel G. Bonasso and Joseph Sugarman, with Bonasso as its first president. The company built 46 lifts, mainly double chairlifts , from 1965 until 1973. SLI had a prototype gondola and triple chair, but it is unlikely that these designs were ever used. SLI chairlifts can still be seen at ski areas such as Telluride, Colorado Telluride and Heavenly . The company was known for inventing the first maintenance free bail chair, well before competitors such as Riblet Tramway Company Riblet or Hall Ski Lift Hall . SLI shipped pre welded towers and terminal parts to the ski areas, avoiding welding on site. SLI was purchased by Riblet Tramway Company in 1973. It was invented in 1908 by Robert Winterhalder in the Black Forest Germany ref http www.nevasport.com nevablogs d el primer remonte del mundo the first skilift in the world 758 Le remonte pente de Schollach ref . The lift consists of an aerial steel rope loop running over a series of wheels, powered by an engine at one end. Hanging from the rope overhead are equally spaced vertical poles or cables attached to a plastic button or platter that is placed between the skiing skiers legs and pulls the skier uphill. Snowboarder s place the platter behind the top of their front leg or in front of their chest under their rear arm and hold it in position with their hands. Attempting to be pulled up just holding on with the arms is tiring and makes balancing more difficult. Also, a common mistake for first time riders is attempting to sit on the platter, which immediately sends both platter and rider to the ground. 1. Gas lift

Unreferenced date February 2008 Gas lift is one of a number of processes used to artificially lift Petroleum oil or water from wells where there is insufficient reservoir pressure to produce the well. The process involves injecting gas through the tubing casing Annulus oil well annulus . Injected gas aerates the fluid to reduce its density the formation pressure is then able to lift the oil column and forces the fluid out of the wellbore. Gas may be injected continuously or intermittently, depending on the producing characteristics of the well and the arrangement of the gas lift equipment. Image Gaslift.jpg right frame Gas lift is a form of artificial lift where gas bubbles lift the oil from the well. The amount of gas to be injected to maximize oil production varies based on well conditions and geometries. Too much or too little injected gas will result in less than maximum production. The name spectacle lift is because the wheel grids resemble a pair of spectacles when in their raised position as observed from the rear of the vehicle. Spectacle lift recovery vehicles have been very popular with vehicle recovery operators for many years due to their versatility. The spectacle lift is able to remove the casualty vehicle with speed. Spectacle lift vehicles are used for breakdown assistance as there is ample stowage space for diagnostic equipment and mechanical tools required to repair a vehicle. Most spectacle lifts are hydraulically operated and able to lift in excess of 1900  kg suitable for cars and light commercial vehicles. The spectacle lift works by lifting the drive axle off the ground so that no mechanical damage is caused to the casualty vehicle. Unreferenced date July 2009 A lift jet is a jet engine angled to provide an aircraft with aerostatic i.e. not requiring the movement of air over an airfoil lift force lift instead of or in addition to thrust. On a fixed wing aircraft, lift jets may be installed as auxiliary engines, with a separate engine to provide forward thrust, or, as in the Harrier jump jet , may be thrust vectoring vectored in flight to provide both. File RollsRoyceRB108.JPG thumb A dedicated lift jet the Rolls Royce RB108 Lift jets were first designed by Germany German engineers during World War II , but none saw operational service. Many nations had experimental programs involving such engines by the early 1950s one typical example was Rolls Royce Plc Rolls Royce s Rolls Royce Thrust Measuring Rig Thrust Measuring Rig TMR , nicknamed the Flying Bedstead , which took its lift solely from engine thrust. An early dedicated lift jet was the Rolls Royce RB108 , first run in 1955. In the early 1960s both the USSR and western nations considered the possibility of lift engines as a way of providing STOL or even VTOL capability to combat aircraft. The Soviets did side by side testing of versions of combat aircraft using swing wing variable geometry wings and lift jets the results became the Mikoyan MiG 23 and Sukhoi Su 24 . The problems with the auxiliary lift engine are high fuel consumption, extra weight which is simply dead weight when the engines are not needed for lift , and taking up fuselage volume that could be used for fuel or other systems. The Soviets decided that variable geometry wings provided comparable advantages in take off performance without as many penalties. 1. Asymmetry of lift

cleanup article date March 2008 Unreferenced date June 2011 Asymmetry of lift describes an aspect of the nature of aerodynamic lift generation by the helicopter rotor rotor blades of a helicopter . Image Autorotational regions.jpg thumb Overhead view of helicopter rotors. The rotor tips travel much faster than the inner sections, so produce more lift. For the purposes of this article, the demarcated circular regions are irrelevant and should be ignored. The phenomenon is most easily envisaged when a helicopter is hover hovering , that is, maintaining a fixed position above a fixed point, and with no wind in the atmosphere. A helicopter rotor blade is an airfoil aerofoil , acting like the wing on an aeroplane being driven through the air to create lift. In the case of a fixed wing aircraft in normal flight, the entire wing travels forward through the air at the same speed. In the case of helicopter rotor blades, the tips of the blade travel very fast through the air a high angular velocity while the parts near the rotor hub travel much more slowly. Because lift increases with speed, the outermost sections of the rotor blades generate more lift than those parts closer to the rotor hub. So a rotor blade is said to be an aysmmetric generator of lift , because of the difference in lift generated along its length. Helicopter manufacturers try to reduce this differential effect that is, aim for more equality of lift along the blade length . This has two main aspects tapering a blade toward its tip, which reduces its surface area, in turn reducing its lift twisting the blade commonly called geometric twist so that the blade root near the hub presents a higher angle of attack, thus higher lift. When the helicopter is travelling forwards with respect to the atmosphere, a further phenomenon comes into play, dissymmetry of lift . References Reflist Category Aerodynamics ...   more details
