  1. Siren disk

About the perforated disk used to modulate air jets to produce sounds Siren disambiguation A siren disk is a disk with holes variously spaced, such that when spun in front of an air jet, the holes modulate the jet in a primarily binary on off fashion, to directly produce sound. Typical usages of siren disks Siren disks were once used as the active element of sirens, but the majority of siren disks currently manufactured are used as instructional aids in teaching the mechanics of sound and music. For example, the Ontario Science Centre has a metal siren disk set up as an interactive teaching exhibit for children. Siren disk hole spacing The harmonic portion of the siren disk Most siren disks include several concentric circles of spaced holes, so that an air jet can be directed at different radii to get different effects. For example, the outermost eight hole circles include uniformly spaced holes, in which the number of holes increases along a harmonic series, so that eight notes of a musical scale can be played by directing an air jet sequentially at each circle. The nonharmonic portion of the siren disk Typically there are further holes near the central part of the disk, with various non uniform patterns, such as random spacing, and the like. Cleanup date August 2010 Image FederalThunderboltSiren.jpg thumb right 150px Federal Thunderbolt Siren The Thunderbolt siren is a discontinued electro mechanical warning civil defense siren siren that was once manufactured in the United States by Federal Signal Corporation . The Thunderbolt siren consists of three major components the blower, rotator and siren chopper. The blower, which is made up of a motor driven Roots type supercharger , supplies the large volume of air for the siren head. It is housed inside a large rectangular box typically found at the base of the siren head. The blower is connected to an air standpipe which pumps 250 cubic feet per minute of air at 6 7 psi up to the siren ... attaches to at the top of the siren. The siren chopper motor in the Thunderbolt siren is actually the same siren motor used in the Federal s Model 2 siren. The siren chopper in the Thunderbolt operates in the same manner as any conventional siren. As the chopper rotor spins air pulses are generated by the rapid opening and closing of the chopper openings. This generates the sound the siren makes. The primary difference in the Thunderbolt siren is that the air supplied by the blower is pumped through the siren resulting in a greatly increased sound volume and distinct sound generated by the Thunderbolt siren. The Thunderbolt siren is operated by a control panel called an RCM Panel. This panel consists of the three relays that switch the three components of the siren on and off. The RCM ... operating in the attack signal while the siren chopper motor is switched on and off which produces the up and down pitch of the attack signal. With the blower and rotator oprerating as the siren motor ... feature of the RCM panel is a transformer in the siren chopper electrical circuit. This transformer has seven different voltage taps from 120 volts up to 240 volts. This allows the top pitch of the siren to be changed as desired when the siren is installed. It was a part of the T class of sirens. It was originally designed as an improved version of the STL 10 civil defense siren. Its original intention was to be used as an updated Siren noisemaker fire siren , and not civil defense, although many cities bought STH 10s for many other purposes. During the late 1950s, a coded version called the STH C was made. This could sound a pulsed coded firecall for fire departments. The STH 10 came in single phase 7.5 HP, and three phase 10 HP. During its later years in production, a 7.5 HP three phase version was made. It had a more raucous tone than the older models built. The STH 10 was discontinued around 2006, and replaced with the Eclipse 8 outdoor warning siren. Popularity The STH 10 is a very popular siren throughout the eastern to midwestern United States. Due to the siren s efficient design and good sound coverage, a lot of smaller towns and some cities have kept their STH 10s instead of replacing them with newer sirens.
