He was the son of Bavaria n Jews who emigrated to America in 1835 and opened a small store on Attorney Street in NYC. In 1865, Altman founded B. Altman & Co. opening a store on Third Avenue and 10th Street in NYC. In 1906, he moved the business to Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. Benjamin Altman died without heirs . Shortly before the death, he founded the Altman Foundation. Until 1985, it owned B. Altman & Co., which latter closed the last store in 1990. Benjamin Altman was an avid collector of Rembrandt paintings and china, much of which he acquired through art dealer Joseph Duveen . Upon his death, he donated the collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art . There is a portrait of Altman in the New York State Museum in Albany it was painted by the Swiss born American artist Adolfo M ller Ury 1862 1947 and donated to the New York Chamber of Commerce by Michael Friedsam. M ller Ury knew Altman personally as a client of art dealer Henry Duveen. He was compelled to paint from a photograph after Altman s death. Unreferenced date December 2009 Tova Toshia Altman 1918 1943 worked with Mordechai Anielewicz as a member of the Jewish Combat Organization OB during the Warsaw ghetto uprising . She initially worked as a courier, making contact with Jewish resistance groups outside of the ghetto and providing them with updates on resistance clashes, as well as providing educational material that was banned by the occupying Nazi Germany German forces. Later, she was critical in helping to smuggle weapons and explosives into the Warsaw ghetto . She escaped a capture attempt on 18 January 1943 and moved to the Jewish Combat Organization ZOB bunker at 18 Mi a Street, she was one of the few to survive the battle on 8 May that saw the bunker abandoned and Mordechai Anielewicz killed. Despite suffering wounds to the leg and head, Altman was able to join a group of approximately seventy five resistance fighters who left the ghetto on 10 May in a daring sewer escape. She was captured again by the Nazis on 24 May when the celluloid factory she was sheltering in accidentally caught fire and she suffered severe burns. She was taken into custody by the Gestapo and died shortly afterward, receiving no medical treatment. She was portrayed by United States of America American actress Leelee Sobieski in the 2001 television movie, Uprising film Uprising .
