Shutruk Nakhunte was king of Elam from about 1185 to 1155 BC middle chronology , and the second king of the Shutrukid Dynasty . Elam amassed an empire that included most of Mesopotamia and western Iran. Under his command, Elam defeated the Kassites and established the short lived Elamite Empire , conquered within about 40 years by Nebuchadnezzar I of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar I of Babylon , in 1120 BC. Shutruk Nakhunte was married to the daughter of a Kassite king named Meli Schipak. In popular culture Shutruk Nakhunte gained a small public exposition in Ethan Canin s short story The Palace Thief , and its adaptation in the 2002 film The Emperor s Club , in which one of the key elements is a plaque describing the exploits of Shutruk Nakhunte, described as a once famous egomaniacal conqueror virtually unknown today. The quote from the film is, I am Shutruk Nahunte, King of Anshand and Sussa, Sovereign of the land of Elam. I destroyed Sippar, took the stele of Niran Sin, and brought it back to Elam, where I erected it as an offering to my god. Shutruk Nahunte, 1158 B.C. Literature D.T. Portal Ancient Near East Coord 33.10 N 44.29 E display title Image Hammurabi s Babylonia 1.svg 300px right thumb Babylonia at the time of Hammurabi , circa ca. 1792 1750 BC Sippar Amnanum modern Tell ed Der in Baghdad Governorate , Iraq was an ancient Near Eastern city about 70 kilometers north of Babylon . History Sippar Amnanum was the sister city or suburb in some eyes of Sippar . Little is known of its history, if any, before the Old Babylonian period The chief deity of Sippar Amnanum was Annunitum or Anunit a warlike aspect of Istar favored by the Akkadians . She is the daughter of Enlil . According to the Cylinder of Nabonidus the temple Eulmash of Anunitu Amnanum was rebuilt by that Neo Babylonian king. The cylinder also reports that the temple had earlier been built by Shagarakti Shuriash, a king of the Kassite dynasty of Babylon . Presumably the temple had been destroyed in the interim by Shutruk Nakhkhunte of Elam when he destroyed Sippar . Note that there is some confusion on the cities name since Sinkashid, a king of Uruk , refers to himself in an inscription as King of the Amnanum , where Amnanum is thought to be a tribal group. Archaeology The site of Tell ed Der, along with Sippar , was excavated by Hormuzd Rassam in the early 1880s. Most of the tablets ended up in the British Museum . As was often the case in the early days of archaeology, excavation records were not made, particularly find spots. This makes it difficult to tell which tablets came from Sippar Amnanum as opposed to Sippar. ref Anne Goddeeris, Economy and Society in Northern Babylonia in the Early Old Babylonian Period, Peeters Publishers, 2002, ISBN 9042911239 ref More Tell ed Der tablets were purchased from locals by E. A. Wallis Budge while he was in the region after brief attempts to dig there. Since the site is relatively close to Baghdad , it was a popular target for illegal excavations. ref E. A. Centurybox 7 The 7th century BC started the first day of 700 BC and ended the last day of 601 BC . The Assyrian Empire continued to dominate the Near East during this century, exercising formidable power over neighbors like Babylon and Egypt . In the last two decades of the century, however, the empire began to unravel as numerous enemies made alliances and waged war from all sides. The Assyrians finally left the world stage permanently when their capital Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC. These events gave rise to the Neo Babylonian Empire , which would dominate the region for much of the following century.
