  1. Sexual dimorphism in dinosaurs

Sexual dimorphism in dinosaurs is difficult to study due to the absence of relevant preserved soft tissue in the fossil record. Nevertheless, some paleontologists have looked for sexual dimorphism among dinosaurs using statistics and comparison to ecologically or phylogenetically related modern animals. Ceratopsians If ceratopsids were to have sexual dimorphism modern ecological analogues suggest it would be in their mating signals like horns and frills. ref name socioecology dimorphism 269 No convincing evidence for sexual dimorphism in body size or mating signals is known in ceratopsids, although was present in Protoceratops andrewsi whose sexes were distinguishable based on frill and nasal prominence size. ref name socioecology dimorphism 269 This is consistent with other known tetrapod groups where midsized animals tended to exhibit markedly more sexual dimorphism than larger ones. ref name socioecology dimorphism 270 However, if there were sexually dimorphic traits they may have been soft tissue variations like colorations or dewlaps that would not have been preserved as fossils. ref name socioecology dimorphism 270 See also Portal Dinosaurs Dinosaur reproduction Footnotes Reflist 3 refs ref name socioecology dimorphism 269 Sexual Dimorphism, Sampson 2001 page 269. ref ref name socioecology dimorphism 270 Sexual Dimorphism, Sampson 2001 page 270. ref References Sampson, S. 1. Frond dimorphism

Unreferenced date September 2007 Frond dimorphism refers to a difference in fern s between the fertile and sterile frond s. Since ferns, unlike flowering plants , bear spore s on the leaf blade itself, this may affect the form of the frond itself. In some species of ferns, there is virtually no difference between the fertile and sterile fronds, such as in the genus Dryopteris , other than the mere presence of the sori, or fruit dots, on the back of the fronds. Some other species, such as Polystichum acrostichoides Christmas fern , or some ferns of the genus Osmunda , feature dimorphism on a portion of the frond only. Others, such as some species of Blechnum and Woodwardia , have fertile fronds that are markedly taller than the sterile. Still others, such as Osmunda cinnamomea Cinnamon fern , or plants of the family Onocleaceae , have fertile fronds that are completely different from the sterile. 1. Sexual bimaturism

refimprove date September 2011 Sexual Bimaturism is an evolution ary idea that affects both sexes and how they develop. In humans, Sexual Bimaturism is evident in how males hit puberty about two years later then girls. This is because in nature polygyny , a marriage system that humans probably practiced in which many females were under one alpha male , has selected for late maturing males. If a young male were to hit puberty early and compete for females he most likely would have been killed by the bigger, stronger male who hit puberty later and waited before entering the sexual game. Types of marriages and how they were to develop Polygyny Many females under one male The typical Bimaturism that tends to develop from this is a slow development on the male part and fast, or normal, development for the female. Example, Humans Polyandry Many males under one females The typical results is usually a slow maturing female while a fast or normally maturing male. Example, Hyena s This is not to be confused with Sexual dimorphism Sexual Dimorphism in which Sexual selection Sexual Selection directly effects natural selection and selects for males with desirable traits for females, who almost always selects the mate. 1. Sexual maturity

Sexual maturity is the age or stage when an organism can reproduction reproduce . It is sometimes considered synonym ous with adulthood , though the two are distinct. In humans, the process of sexually maturing is termed puberty . Most multicellular organisms are unable to sexually reproduce at birth or germination , and depending on the species, it may be days, weeks, or years until their bodies are able to do so. Also, certain cues may cause the organism to become sexually mature. They may be external, such as drought, or internal, such as percentage of body fat such internal cues are not to be confused with hormones which directly produce sexual maturity . Sexual maturity is brought about by a maturing of the reproductive organs and the production of gamete s. It may also be accompanied by a growth spurt or other physical changes which distinguish the immature organism from its adult form. These are termed secondary sex characteristic s, and often represent an increase in sexual dimorphism . For example, before puberty, human children have flat chests, but adult females have breast s while adult males generally do not. However, there are exceptions such as obesity and hormone imbalances such as Gynecomastia. After sexual maturity is achieved, it is possible for some organisms to become infertile, or even to change their sex. Some organisms are hermaphrodite s and may or may not be able to produce viable offspring. Also, while in many organisms sexual maturity is strongly linked to age, many other factors are involved, and it is possible for some to display most or all of the characteristics of the adult form without being sexually mature. 1. Sexual field

A sexual field is an arena of social life whereby individuals compete for sexual status. The term builds on Pierre Bourdieu s 1980 concept of field and has been defined as a set of interlocking institutions Martin and George 2006 and an institutionalized matrix of relations Green 2005, 2008 that confers status upon sexual actors based on individual variation in erotic capital . Relative to those with an erotic capital deficit, actors in possession of erotic capital reap the rewards of the sexual field&mdash including the ability to select desired sexual partners and the acquisition of social significance. Sexual fields are themselves distinguished by distinct currencies of erotic capital Green 2005, 2008 , the latter which are quite variable, acquiring dominance in relation to the collective preferences of players. For example, Green 2005, 2008 argues that the characteristics which confer erotic capital in one field may not in another.
