The Serendipity Singers were a 1960s American folk music folk group, similar to The New Christy Minstrels . This nine member folk oriented group started at the University of Colorado with seven original members of a group called the Newport Singers. Those members Bryan Sennett, Brooks Hatch, Mike Brovsky, John Madden, Jon Arbenz, Bob Young and Lynne Weintraub had, with the exception of Weintraub, all previously worked together in various trios before coming together to form the Newport Singers. Cybernetic Serendipity was an exhibition of computer art curated by Jasia Reichardt , shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts , London in 1968, and then touring the United States. Content One part of the exhibition was concerned with algorithms and devices for generating music. Some exhibits were pamphlets describing the algorithms, whilst others showed musical notation produced by computers. Devices made musical effects and played tapes of sounds made by computers. Peter Zinovieff lent part of his studio equipment visitors could sing or whistle a tune into a microphone and his equipment would improvise a piece of music based on the tune. Another part described computer projects such as Gustav Metzger s self destructive Five screens with computer , a design for a new hospital, a computer programmed structure, and dance choreography. The machines and installations were a very noticeable part of the exhibition. Gordon Pask produced a collection of large mobiles with interacting parts that let the viewers join in the conversation. Serendipity is a series of children s books about animals and other creatures. The books were written by Stephen Cosgrove writer Stephen Cosgrove b. July 26, 1945 and illustrated by Robin James . The books are short stories with colorful illustrations that have a moral perspective. Cosgrove wrote the books after searching for an easy to read book with a message to read to his then three year old daughter. After searching for such books and finding primarily large expensive books, he decided to write his own. Cosgrove teamed up with illustrator James to create low cost softcover books. After attempting to have the books published only to be rejected, receiving an offer to publish the books only in hardcover, Cosgrove created his own publishing company Serendipity Press. The first four books of the Serendipity Series was first released in 1974 . These books are Serendipity , The Dream Tree . Wheedle on the Needle and The Muffin Dragon . Cosgrove merged Serendipity Press with the publishing company, Price Stern Sloan Penguin Putnum in 1978 so that Cosgrove could focus on writing.
