She was a three masted cargo schooner as you see her now. Captain Wilhem Wilckens was her owner and master and he operated from the homeport of Hamburg from 1930 until 1960. In 1960 she was purchased by Captain Karl Asmussen of Egersund, Denmark. In the spring of 1998 Captain Asmussen suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while at the helm. As he was the only crew on watch at the time the ship went up on a beach near Malmo , Sweden . Drydocking determined that little damage had been suffered. Throughout the years from 1930 until 1998 Kajama traded general cargo. Her voyages went as far south as Bilboa in Northwest Spain, throughout western Europe , and Scandinavia , and above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. His name has been transliterated as Cetawayo , Cetewayo , Cetywajo and Ketchwayo . Early life Cetshwayo was a son of Zulu king Mpande and Queen Ngqumbazi, half nephew of Zulu king Shaka and grandson of Senzangakhona kaJama . In 1856 he defeated and killed in battle his younger brother Mbuyazi, Mpande s favourite, and became the effective ruler of the Zulu people. He did not ascend to the throne, however, as his father was still alive. His other brother, Umtonga, was still a potential rival. In 1861, Umtonga fled to the Boers side of the border and Cetshwayo had to make deals with the Boers to get him back. In 1865, Umtonga did the same thing, apparently making Cetshwayo believe that Umtonga would organize help from the Boers against him, the same way his father had overthrown his predecessor, Dingaan . Reign Mpande died in 1873 and Cetshwayo became king on 1 September. Sir Theophilus Shepstone , who annexed the Transvaal Colony Transvaal for Britain, was present at Cetshwayo s coronation, but turned on the Zulus as he felt he was undermined by Cetshwayo s skillful negotiating for land area compromised by encroaching Boers. ref Martin Meredith, Diamonds, Gold, & War New York Public Affairs, 2007 , 88. ref As was customary, he created a new capital for the nation and called it Ulundi the high place . Each combatant is armed with two long sticks, one of which is used for defense and the other for offense. Little armor is used. Although Nguni Xhosa styles of fighting may use only two sticks, variations of Bantu Nguni stick fighting throughout Southern Africa incorporate shields as part of the stick fighting weaponry. Zulu stick fighting uses an Isiquili or attacking stick, an Uboko or defending stick and an izoliHauw or defending shield. The object is for two opposing warriors to fight each other to establish which of them is the strongest or the Bull Inkunzi . In modern times this usually occurs as part of the wedding ceremony where warriors from the bridegroom s household and area welcome warriors from the bride s household and area to meet to get to know each other , other groups of warriors may also be welcome to join in. Warriors do this by engaging in combat with one another. An induna or War Captain Referee from each group of warriors keeps his crew in check and keeps order between fighters. The Zulu Civil War or Ndwandwe Zulu War of 1817&ndash 1819 was a war fought between the expanding Zulu Kingdom and the Ndwandwe tribe in South Africa . The Zulus were originally a small tribe that had migrated to the eastern plateau of present day South Africa they became a strong tribal nation largely due to the efforts of an ambitious chieftain named Shaka reigned c. 1787&ndash 1828 . A rebellious young man, Shaka was estranged from his father, who was a Zulu chief named Senzangakhona, and became a warrior with the Mthethwa people. The Mthethwa paramount chieftain Dingiswayo helped Shaka become recognized as head of the Zulus after Senzangakhona died in 1816. The two chieftains were close friends, and their warriors fought together against common enemies, such as the Ndwandwe headed by King Zwide . After Dingiswayo was murdered by Zwide, the Mthethwa people placed themselves under Shaka and took the Zulu name. Shaka revolutionized traditional ways of fighting by introducing the assegai , a short stabbing spear , as a weapon and by organizing warriors into disciplined units that fought in close formation behind large cowhide shields. In the Battle of Gqokli Hill in 1817, his troops and tactics prevailed over the superior numbers of the Ndwandwe people, who failed to destroy the Zulus in their first encounter. The Ndwandwe and the Zulus met again in combat at the Battle of Mhlatuze River in 1819. By this time the Ndwandwe had adopted Zulu battle tact ... more details
