In the context of audio , semantic or semantic audio is used to mean the extraction of symbols or meaning from an audio stream. Speech recognition is an important semantic audio application. But for speech, other semantic operations include language, speaker or gender identification. For more general audio or music, it includes identifying a piece of music e.g. Shazam service or a movie soundtrack. The term semantic URL refers to a Uniform Resource Locator URL which is of a form that is immediately and intuitively meaningful to Layman non experts . Such URL schemes tend to reflect the conceptual structure of a collection of information see Information Architecture and Coupling computer science decouple the user interface from a server s internal representation of information. Semantic URLs have become an issue in recent years with the increasing use of server side scripting to power web sites and web services. Non semantic URLs A non semantic URL is typically composed of a Path computing path , script name, and query string . The query string parameters dictate the content that is to be shown on the page, as in the following example nowiki http example.com showproduct.cgi?prodid 3448 nowiki Problems The key issue with non semantic URL is that while the query string parameters can be manipulated by hand, it is not always obvious what their possible values are. For example, many content management systems use a database record number to specify the page. This has a logical meaning only to the database management system , meaning page URLs cannot be inferred by users. Also, if the site database is moved restructured, or the site itself is ported to a different software, all of its URLs can change, due to database records being re ordered, script file names and or extensions being changed, and so on. This can cause numerous problems, such as broken links both internally and from external sites and removal of search engine listings. Calques, loanword s and semantic loans are often grouped roughly under the phrase borrowing . Semantic loans often occur when two languages are in close contact. Examples One example is the German semantic loan realisieren . The English verb to realise has more than one meaning it means both to make something happen come true and to become aware of something . The German language German verb realisieren originally only meant the former to make something real. However, German later borrowed the other meaning of to realise from English, and today, according to Duden ref name autogenerated1 Duden das gro e W rterbuch der deutschen Sprache, 2000 ref , also means to become aware of something this meaning is still considered by many to be an Anglicism . The word realisieren itself already existed before the borrowing took place the only thing borrowed was this second meaning. Compare this with a calque, such as antibody , from the German Antik rper , where the word antibody did not exist in English before it was borrowed. A similar example is the German semantic loan berziehen , which meant only to draw something across, before it took on the additional borrowed meaning of its literal English translation overdraw in the financial sense ref name autogenerated1 . A semantic mapper is tool or service that aids in the transformation of data element s from one namespace into another namespace. A semantic mapper is an essential component of a semantic broker and one tool that is enabled by the Semantic Web technologies. The Semantic Grid refers to an approach to Grid computing in which information, computing resources and services are described using the semantic data model . In this model the data and metadata are expressed through facts small sentences . Therefore it becomes directly understandable for humans. This makes it easier for resources to be discovered and joined up automatically, which helps bring resources together to create Virtual Organization Grid computing Virtual Organizations VOs . The descriptions constitute metadata and are typically represented using the technologies of the Semantic Web , such as the Resource Description Framework RDF . By analogy with the Semantic Web, the Semantic Grid can be defined as an extension of the current Grid in which information and services are given well defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. This notion of the Semantic Grid was first articulated in the context of e Science , observing that such an approach is necessary to achieve a high degree of easy to use and seamless automation enabling flexible collaborations and computations on a global scale. The use of Semantic Web and other knowledge technologies in Grid applications is sometimes described as the Knowledge Grid . Semantic Grid extends this by also applying these technologies within the Grid middleware .
