  1. Breathing tube (breathing apparatus)

A breathing tube is a flexible tube for breathing through, as part of a scuba set or other breathing apparatus or a medical oxygen apparatus or anaesthetic apparatus Here they are distinguished from the medium pressure hoses which are often found as parts of modern breathing apparatus . They are wide, and usually corrugated to let the user s head move about without the tube pinching at kinks. Each end usually has a screw connection. They may contain a one way valve to keep the air or gas flowing the right way. According to the expected usage, they may be pure rubber, or rubber reinforced with canvas outside or embedded or similar. If the canvas layer is outside as in the Siebe Gorman Salvus and the IDA71 and some old gasmask s, it protects the rubber from damage from scrapes but makes it harder to wash all the salt off after a saltwater dive. Breathing tubes have to be long enough to connect the apparatus to the diver s head in all attitudes of his head, but should not loop about excessively to cause hydrodynamic drag or risk snagging snag on things, or contain excess Deadspace in breathing apparatus dead space . In the IDA71 the looping over the shoulders breathing tubes can be tethered down to the diver s shoulders. Some early rebreather s had one breathing tube, which the breathed gas went through both ways this is called the pendulum system others have two breathing tubes, with one way valve s keeping the gas flowing the right way. In some rebreather s, parts of the apparatus are connected to each other by lengths of breathing tube, resulting in more lengths of tube in the apparatus 2 in the Salvus mask to absorbent canister , absorbent canister to breathing bag this is a pendulum system . 4 lengths in the Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory Unit mask to exhalent bag to absorbent canister to inhalent bag to mask Category Breathing apparatus underwater diving stub ...   more details

It can be reduced by Using separate intake and exhaust passages with one way valves placed in the mouthpiece. With a fullface mask Keeping its inside volume small. Unreferenced date December 2009 Self contained self rescue device , SCSR , or self contained self rescuer , is a portable oxygen source for providing breathable air when the surrounding atmosphere lacks oxygen or is contaminated with toxic gases, eg. carbon monoxide . A SCSR is usually a closed circuit breathing apparatus with a chemical oxygen generator or a compressed oxygen cylinder and a carbon dioxide absorber. SCSRs are most commonly used in some coal mine s, are intended for one person, and usually supply at least one hour of oxygen. They are sometimes referred to as air packs . SCSRs are intended to facilitate escape from mines after a fire or explosion. Use for other purposes is discouraged. Some SCSRs use potassium superoxide as a chemical oxygen source. 1. Antecedent-contained deletion

Antecedent contained deletion antecedent contained ellipsis is a phenomenon found in contexts containing verb phrase ellipsis and a quantifier . The ellipsis appears to be contained inside its antecedent, which should result in an infinite regress and thus ungrammaticality. The problem arises in phrase structure grammar phrase structure grammars that see the constituent linguistics constituent as the fundamental unit of syntactic analysis. ref See for instance Bouton 1970, Sag 1976, May 1985, Baltin 1987, Hornstein 1994, and Kennedy 1997. ref It does not arise if the catena linguistics catena is taken to be the fundamental unit. The catena is associated with dependency grammar dependency grammars . ref See for example gel et al. 2003 6 ref The problem in phrase structure grammars To understand the issue involved, it is necessary to understand how VP ellipsis works. Consider the following examples, where the expected, but elided, VP is represented with a smaller font and subscripts John washed the dishes, and Mary did sub small wash the dishes small sub , too. John washed the dishes on Tuesday, and Mary did sub small wash the dishes on Tuesday small sub , too. In both of these sentences, the VP has been elided in the second half of the sentence. In both cases, the elided VP must be identical to the antecedent in the first clause. That is, the missing predicate in the first sentence can only mean wash the dishes , and in the second sentence, the missing predicate can only mean wash the dishes on Tuesday . Assuming that the missing VP must be identical to an antecedent VP leads to a problem, first noticed by Bouton 1970. 1. Psychic apparatus

psychoanalysis The term psychic apparatus also psychical apparatus , mental apparatus denotes a central, theoretic construct of Sigmund Freud Freudian metapsychology , wherein quote We assume that mental life is the function of an apparatus to which we ascribe the characteristics of being extended in space and of being made up of several portions Id, ego, and super ego Id, ego, super ego . Freud, An Outline of Psychoanalysis 1940 As a Ego psychology psychologist , Sigmund Freud used the German terms psychischer Apparat and seelischer Apparat , about the functioning of which he elaborates quote We picture the unknown apparatus, which serves the activities of the mind, as being really like an instrument constructed of several parts which we speak of as agencies , each of which performs a particular function, and which have a fixed, spatial relation to one another it being understood that by spatial relation in front of and behind , superficial and deep we merely mean, in the first instance, a representation of the regular succession of the functions. Freud, The Question of Lay Analysis 1926 Freud proposed the psychic apparatus as solely a theoretic construct explaining the functioning of the mind , and not a Neurology neurologic structure of the brain quote It is a hypothesis , like so many others in the sciences the very earliest ones have always been rather rough. Open to revision , we can say in such cases . . . the value of a fiction of this kind . . . depends on how much one can achieve with its help. Freud, The Question of Lay Analysis 1926 Moreover, in emphasizing the immateriality of the psychic apparatus, Dr. Freud dismissed the matter of its physical substance quote That is not a subject of psychological interest. Ego psychology Psychology can be as indifferent to it as, for instance, optics can be to the question of whether the walls of a telescope are made of metal or cardboard. We shall leave entirely to one side the material line of approach. Freud, The Question ...   more details

  1. Kipp's apparatus

Image Kipp apparatus.jpg thumb Kipp apparatus Kipp s apparatus , also called Kipp generator , is an apparatus designed for preparation of small volumes of gas es. It was invented around 1860 by the Dutch pharmacist Petrus Jacobus Kipp and widely used in chemical laboratories and for demonstrations in schools into the second half of the 20th century. It later fell out of use, at least in laboratories, because most gases then became available in small gas cylinder s. These industrial gases are much purer and drier than those initially obtained from a Kipp apparatus without further processing. Design and operation The apparatus is made of three vertically stacked cylinders, roughly resembling a snowman. The solid material e.g., iron sulfide is placed into the middle cylinder, the acid is put into the top cylinder. A tube extends from the top cylinder into the bottom cylinder. The middle cylinder has a tube with a stopcock attached, which is used to draw off the evolved gas. When the stopcock is closed, the pressure of the gas in the middle cylinder rises and expels the acid back into the top cylinder, until it is not in contact with the solid material anymore, and the chemical reaction stops. Kipp generators only work properly in the described manner if the solid material is insoluble in the acid. They are usually made of glass , or sometimes of polyethylene . Examples for prepared gases and their educts Hydrogen from zinc flakes and hydrochloric acid Carbon dioxide from pieces of marble calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid Hydrogen sulfide from iron II sulfide and hydrochloric acid Acetylene from calcium carbide and water Chlorine from potassium permanganate or manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid For further reading cite book last Green first John Joseph title Chemical ... apparatus PPA617,M1 cite journal author Sella, Andrea title Kipp s Apparaatus journal Chemistry World ...
