see Wikipedia Persondata . NAME Straton Of Sardis ALTERNATIVE NAMES SHORT DESCRIPTION Poet and anthologist DATE OF BIRTH PLACE OF BIRTH DATE OF DEATH PLACE OF DEATH DEFAULTSORT Straton Of Sardis Category ...Straton of Sardis maybe better known under his Latin name Strato was a Greek language Greek poet and anthologist from the Lydia n city of Sardis . He is thought to have lived during the time of Hadrian , based on Straton authorship of a poem about the doctor Artemidorus Capito , a contemporary of Hadrian. Straton is mentioned by Diogenes Laertius , at the beginning of the 3rd century AD. Straton assembled the anthology of erotic and amorous epigram s called the Mousa Paidike , The Boyish Muse or Musa Puerilis . Around 900 AD, a Byzantine Empire Byzantine scholar named Constantine Cephalas compiled pieces of several Greek anthologies, including The Boyish Muse , to make a comprehensive collection of Greek epigram s. Since there is no other textual proof, we do not know if The Boyish Muse was taken whole, or if a selection was made from it, or if Cephalas maintained the order of the original anthology, or how much of it is original. Anthology of Cephalas Cephalas s collection was revised, divided into specialized anthologies, adapted for school use, and generally much copied. In 1301 AD, a scholar named Maximus Planudes put together a Thomas Bowdler bowdlerized version of the Cephalan book, which became very popular in the Greek part of the Oikumene i . When the Ottoman Empire Ottomans conquered the remains of the Byzantine empire , many Greek scholars brought versions of Planudes version with them into exile in Italy . The Greeks became teachers to Italian scholars. In 1494 they printed an edition of the Planudean book, the Florilegium Diversorum Epigrammatum , in Florence . 1. Sardis, Oklahoma

Sardis was a community in northern Pushmataha County, Oklahoma , six miles northwest of Clayton, Oklahoma . A United States Post Office was established at Sardis, Indian Territory on February 20, 1905. It took its name from the nearby Sardis Indian Mission Church, which appears to have named itself after the Biblical city of Sardis . ref George H. Shirk, Oklahoma Place Names , p. 187 Post Office Site Location Reports, Record Group 28, National Archives. ref During the early 1980s Jack s Fork Creek was impounded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , who built Sardis Lake Oklahoma Sardis Lake . The lake , a flood control project, also held tourism potential and Oklahoma State Highway 43 was straightened and paved with blacktop all the way from the interchange road interchange at Daisy, Oklahoma on the Indian Nation Turnpike to the lake, where it crosses the dam and connects to Oklahoma State Highway 2 . This allowed for easier road connections to other parts of the state highway network. At this writing tourism has not been promoted heavily or its economic benefits realized at the lake. In order to make way for the lake the community of Sardis was emptied. Its cemetery , now located on an island in the lake connected to the shore by a short causeway , is at the approximate location as it was originally, but the tombstones now sit on landfill and are many feet higher than originally. The graves they denote are below the bottom of the lake. The earliest gravestones are dated 1875 , a testament to the community s early founding. ref Pushmataha County Cemeteries , pp. 156 159. ref Sardis was located in the picturesque Jack s Fork Creek valley , just above its junction with the Kiamichi River valley, framed by the steep slopes of Flagpole Mountain 1,562 ft. on the south and the Potato Hills a geographic curiosity due to their highly irregular shapes on the north.
