Unreferenced date October 2007 The Second Maroon War of 1795 1796 was an eight month conflict between the Maroon people Maroons of Trelawny Parish, Jamaica and the British. The other Maroon communities did not take part in this rebellion and their treaty with the British remained in force until Jamaica gained its independence in 1962. The Outbreak of the War Maroons felt that they were being mistreated under the terms of Cudjoe s Treaty of 1739, which ended the First Maroon War . The spark of the war was when two Maroons were flogged by a black slave for stealing two pigs . When six Maroon leaders came to the British to present their grievances, the British took them as prisoners. Fighting began in mid August. The War The war lasted for five months as a bloody stalemate. The British 5,000 troops and militia outnumbered the Maroons ten to one, but the mountainous and forested topography of Jamaica proved ideal for guerrilla warfare. The Maroons surrendered the war in December 1795, intimidated by the arrival of one hundred bloodhound s and their handlers imported from Cuba. Aftermath The treaty signed in December between Major General George Walpole and the Maroon leaders established that the Maroons would beg on their knees for the King s forgiveness, return all runaway slaves, and be relocated elsewhere in Jamaica. The governor of Jamaica ratified the treaty, but gave the Maroons only three days to present themselves to beg forgiveness on January 1, 1796. Suspicious of British intentions, most of the Maroons did not surrender until mid March. The British used the contrived breach of treaty as a pretext to deport the entire Trelawney town Maroons to Nova Scotia . Now Trajan set out to Dacia with total conquest in his sights. Before the War Following his subjugation, Decebalus complied with Rome for a time, but was soon inciting revolt among tribes against them and pillaging Roman colonies across the Danube . True to the intrepid and optimistic nature he had become renowned for, Trajan rallied his forces once more in 106 for a secondwar against the Kingdom of Roman Dacia Dacia . The War At the start of the war, Trajan built another bridge over the Danube to move his legions faster into Dacia. Unlike the first conflict, the secondwar involved several skirmishes that proved costly to the Roman military, who, facing large numbers of allied tribes, struggled to attain a decisive victory. Eventually, however, Rome prevailed and took Dacia. An assault against the capital Sarmisegetusa took place at the beginning of the summer of 106 with the participation of the legions Legio II Adiutrix II Adiutrix and Legio IV Flavia Felix IV Flavia Felix and a detachment vexillatio from Legio VI Ferrata see also Battle of Sarmisegetusa . The war lasted from 104 BC until 100 BC . The Consul Gaius Marius was recruiting for his eventually successful war against the Cimbri in Cisalpine Gaul . He requested support from King Nicomedes III of Bithynia . Additional troops were not supplied due to the claim that contracted Roman tax collectors had enslaved Italians unable to pay their debts. Marius decreed that any allied friendly Italian should be released if they were in Roman slavery. Around 800 Italian slaves were released from Sicily, frustrating many non Italians who thought they would be released as well, and many of these abandoned their masters incorrectly believing to have been freed. A rebellion broke out when they were ordered back to servitude by the Governor. A slave by the name of Salvius was following in the footsteps of Eunus , fighting for his rights and elected leader of this rebellion. He assumed the name Tryphon, from Diodotus Tryphon , a Seleucid ruler. He amassed an army containing thousands of trained and equipped slaves, including 2,000 cavalry and 20,000 infantry, and was joined by a Cicilian named Athenion ....
