Meters Above mean sealevel above seaLevel is a standard metric system metric measurement of the elevation of a location in reference to historic mean sealevel the determination of what actually constitutes mean sealevel over time however, may be determined by other parameters, such as the effects of climate history and climate change , and may have differed in the past, as well as in the future, from that established by historic, modern, documented elevations. Uses Meters above sealevel is the standard measurement of the elevation or altitude of a geographic location such as a town , mountain , or other landmark the elevation of the top of a building or other nonbuilding structure structure or the altitude of an airplane or other flying object. How determined The elevation or altitude in Meters above sealevel of any location, object, or point, can be determined in a number of ways. The most common include Global Positioning System GPS which triangulates its location in reference to multiple Artificial Satellite satellite s an altimeter , which typically measures atmospheric pressure , which decreases as altitude increases. a topographic map or digital elevation model map, for which elevations have been determined by aerial photography or surveying . The SeaLevel Datum of 1929 was the vertical control datum geodesy datum established for vertical control surveying in the United States United States of America by the General Adjustment of 1929. The datum was used to measure elevation altitude above, and depression geology depression wikt depth depth below, mean sealevel MSL . Mean sealevel was measured at 26 tide gauges 21 in the United States and 5 in Canada . The datum was defined by the observed heights of mean sealevel at the 26 tide gauges and by the set of elevations of all bench marks resulting from the adjustment. The adjustment required a total of 66,315 miles 106,724 km of leveling with 246 closed circuits and 25 circuits at sealevel. Since the SeaLevel Datum of 1929 was a hybrid model, it was not a pure model of mean sealevel , the geoid , or any other equipotential surface. Therefore, it was renamed the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 NGVD 29 in 1973. The NGVD 29 was subsequently replaced by the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 NAVD 88 based upon the General Adjustment of the North American Datum of 1988. Refimprove date April 2007 One source article date March 2009 The term above mean sealevel AMSL refers to the elevation on the ground or altitude in the air of any object, relative to the average sealevel datum geodesy datum . AMSL is used extensively in radio both in broadcasting and other telecommunications uses by engineer s to determine the coverage area a station will be able to reach. It is also used in aviation , where all heights are recorded and reported with respect to AMSL though also see flight level , and in the atmospheric sciences . Definition The concept of a mean sealevel is in itself rather artificial, because it is not possible to determine a figure for mean sealevel for the entire planet, and it varies quite a lot even on a much smaller scale. This is because the sea is in constant motion, affected by the high and low pressure zones above it, the tides, local gravitational differences, and so forth. The best one can do is to pick a spot and calculate the mean sealevel at that point and use it as a datum geodesy datum . For example, the Ordnance Survey uses a height datum based on the measurements of mean sealevel at a particular gauge at Newlyn , Cornwall from 1915 to 1921 ref http www.pol.ac.uk ntslf tgi ntobs.html Newlyn Tidal Observatory National Oceanography Centre NERC ref for their maps of Great Britain, and this datum is actually some 80  cm different from the mean sealevel reading obtained on the other side of the country. An alternative is to base height measurements on an reference ellipsoid ellipsoid of the entire earth, which is what systems such as GPS do. In aviation, the ellipsoid known as World Geodetic System 84 is increasingly used to define mean sealevel. Another alternative is to use a geoid based datum geodesy datum such as NAVD88 ... case that a location is below sealevel, AMSL itself is a negative number. The Global SeaLevel Observing System GLOSS is an Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission program whose purpose is to measure sealevel globally for long term climate change studies. The program s purpose has changed since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the program now collects realtime measurements of sealevel. The project is currently upgrading the over 290 stations it currently runs, so that they can send realtime data via satellite to newly set up national tsunami centres. They are also fitting the stations with Photovoltaic module solar panel s so they can continue to operate even if the mains power supply is interrupted by severe weather. The Global SeaLevel Observing System does not compete with Deep ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis as most GLOSS transducer s are located close to land masses while DART s transducers are far out in the ocean.
