  1. Saturn C-3

The Saturn C 3 was the third rocket in the Saturn C series studied in 1960 . The Saturn C 3 was intended to be used as a contender for one of just two methods to get the moon, which was Earth Orbit Rendezvous. The booster consisted of a first stage containing two Saturn V F 1 rocket engine F 1 engines, a second stage containing four powerful J 2 rocket engine J 2 engines, and the S IV stage from a Saturn I booster. All stages for the Saturn C 3, except the S IV, never flew except for their engines, used on the Saturn V rocket which took men to the moon. 1. Saturn V-3

Studied by the Marshall Space Flight Center in 1965, the Saturn V 3 or the MLV 5 3, the booster utilized new engines and new stages that were never used on the original Saturn V . The first stage used new F 1 rocket engine F 1 engines designated F 1A that were pump fed, had 20 better thrust and a six second improvement in specific impulse on an F 1 first stage stretched 240  inches. The second third stages used new HG 3 engines developed from the J 2 rocket engine J 2 engines, but were never used, although its technology led to the development of the Space Shuttle Main Engine . This booster was one of six Saturn MLV designs that never flew. But if these vehicles had been manufactured in the first place, they would have been perfect for Apollo Applications Program , Manned Orbiting Research Laboratory, Mars fly by and Mars landing missions in the 1970s and 1980s, instead of the Space Shuttle Program which ran until 2011. The basic concept of the Saturn II was to save money by ceasing production of the Saturn IB rocket, and replacing it with a slightly more capable rocket, built entirely with Saturn V components. This would allow closing down production lines for the S IB stage, and would allow for more efficient integration of rocket systems. It would have replaced the Saturn IB, which had a maximum payload capability of convert 46,000 lb kg , for launching spacecraft into low Earth orbit . Design The Saturn II in its most simple form, was a Saturn V, without the S IC first stage. The Saturn V s second stage S II became the first stage, and the S IVB 200 used on the Saturn IB and Saturn V became the second stage. Several derivatives were also considered, but before any version could be put into production, production of all Saturn variants was stopped in favor of launching all future payloads from the Space Shuttle . 1. Saturn Rukh

Unreferenced date September 2009 Image Saturnruhk cover.jpg thumb 120px right Cover of Robert L. Forward s novel Saturn Rukh . Saturn Rukh is a hard science fiction novel written by the United States physicist Robert L. Forward . It was first published in hardcover in March 1997 and later in paperback in 1998 by Tor Books . Saturn Rukh is themed around human contact with alien organisms on the gaseous planet Saturn . The novel is a speculation of the nature of intelligent life in a non earth Terran ecosystem, in this case the atmosphere of a gas giant planet. Synopsis In an unspecified time in the future, a multi national consortium sends a team of six astronauts each with the chance of earning a billion dollars if they complete their mission properly to Saturn to establish a factory that mines helium for the production of precious meta stabilized metastable helium , a powerful rocket fuel, in the planet s upper atmosphere. With only enough meta fuel to get them to Saturn, failure will cost them their lives. And all too soon the crew of astronauts crash lands on a surface, which is actually the back of an enormous alien life form they dub the Rukh, a 4 kilometer long, bizarre sting ray shaped creature that swims through Saturn s gaseous upper atmosphere and has two brains, both male and female. When part of their apparatus is swallowed by one of these giant birdlike beings, the crew needs to find a way to communicate and to be able to cooperate with the Rukhs so that they may survive. 1. Saturn C-4

refimprove date November 2008 The Saturn C 4 was a conceptual American launch vehicle , originally proposed in 1960 to be used in a Lunar orbit rendezvous lunar landing . It would have consisted of three stages an S IB 4 first stage, a S II 4 second stage and a S IVB third stage. The first and second stages were essentially four engine variants of the stages that were used on the Saturn V , while the IVB stage was actually used on both the Saturn V and the Saturn IB . Although NASA eventually used the Lunar orbit rendezvous method to go to the Moon, it decided to use the larger Saturn V which would provide a reserve capacity. The Saturn C 4 would have been able to lift 99,000  kg 218,000  lb into Low Earth Orbit and 32,000  kg 70,000  lb on a translunar trajectory. It would have been capable of sending the 30,000  kg 67,000  lb Apollo Command Service Module into lunar orbit, but it would not have been able to carry the 15,000  kg 32,000  lb Lunar Module as well, vindicating NASA s decision to use the Saturn V.
