The Sark to Jersey Rowing Race is the longest, most prestigious sea rowing event in the Channel Islands. It takes place annually during the summer months but the date varies according to tide times and tide height. The exact length of the race depends on the tidal flows on the day and the navigational ability of the cox and or crew if it is a coxless boat . When the race was first run in 1967 the course was cited as being 20 nautical miles long. Recently, more accurate plotting puts the average course at approximately 15 nautical miles. Competitors In 2011 a total on 54 boats took part. This is an average size fleet for the race. The majority were sliding seat rowing boats but some were older, fixed seat design. Crews are men s, ladies or mixed and there is a mixture of singles, doubles pairs , quads fours . The race is the unofficial inter insular between the Guernsey Rowing Club and the Jersey Rowing Club, which co organises the race with Bonne Nuit Boat Owners Association. The top crews from both islands take part but so do many inexperienced teams of friends from workplaces, clubs and families. Novices can race alongside experienced competitors. Crews from coastal towns on the nearly French coast regularly participate, as well as crews from the UK and other European countries. In 2011 a four man crew from Holland took part. Rivalry between the Jersey and Guernsey clubs is fierce, with Guernsey dominating in recent years. Several Sark to Jersey competitors have gone on to make the transatlantic crossing. One of them, Jerseyman Ian Blandin, is now the Sark to Jersey Race co ordinator. The course The start is just outside Dixcart Bay in Sark.
