Unreferenced date September 2011 GIS Centric is an application approach leveraging the Esri ArcGIS Geodatabase. This term has been used loosely to explain a GIS central focus of an application s functionality, whereas the term map centric maybe better suited. GIS Centric has been specifically defined especially in the area of public asset management and infrastructure asset management where the enterprise asset management EAM system consists of a central repository or asset registry AR of asset data and attributes combined with the Computerized Maintenance Management System CMMS which seamlessly uses the AR without duplicating databases or introducing data integrity issues through integration procedures. For a system to be certified as GIS Centric by NAGCS http www.nagcs.org and fully leverage the GIS , it must meet these seven basic criteria. 1.The Esri ArcGIS geodatabase is the asset database where the asset attributes are stored. 2.The asset data storage is non redundant no reliance on views, data mapping, database triggers, or transparent links. 3.The asset data model is fully user definable and customizable without vendor support. 4.The format of the asset data model is non proprietary, including data names, fields, tables, relationships, and other asset data design elements. 5.The application is interoperable, providing maximum compatibility with other GIS centric applications and concurrent use of the asset database. 6.Asset data coordinated location and connectivity is inherent in the asset data model, enabling full utilization of the spatial analysis capabilities, including linear referencing and events. 7.Asset data is created and maintained using Esri s GIS tools for editing, including asset data error identification and correction methods, particularly for network type assets and polygonal features which check for connected nodes, overlaps, missing segments, linear segments, flow relationships, and adjacency. Notability Products date November 2010 Chameleon is an open source, distributed, highly configurable, environment for developing Web Mapping applications. It is built on MapServer as the core mapping engine and works with all MapServer supported data formats. It also works well with OpenGIS Consortium standards for Web Map Services Web Map Service WMS and Web Map Context Documents WMC through MapServer s support for these standards. Chameleon was originally developed in 2002 by DM Solutions Group under contract to Natural Resources Canada NRCan , in support of Canada s GeoConnections program, contributing to the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure CGDI . Originally named CWC2 CGDI WMS Client Component , Chameleon was renamed once formally released to the open source community. CWC2 was developed in response to the growing number of WMS servers and lack of user friendly WMS clients in developing web mapping applications. Chameleon has a plugin architecture. A large number of plugins, or widgets as they are called by the Chameleon developers, are available. A Chameleon widget can implement a mapping task such as zooming, panning, showing legends, or displaying map coordinates. Over a hundred widgets are distributed with the application and developers can easily create their own widget for any specific task.
