  1. Rubidium standard

A rubidium standard or rubidium atomic clock is a frequency standard in which a specified hyperfine level hyperfine transition of electron s in rubidium 87 atoms is used to control the output frequency. They are the most inexpensive, compact, and widely used type of atomic clock , used to control the frequency of television station s, cellular base station cell phone base stations , in test equipment, and global navigation satellite system s like Global Positioning System GPS . Commercial rubidium clocks are less accurate than Cesium clock cesium atomic clock s which serve as Primary standard primary frequency standards , so the rubidium clock is a secondary frequency standard . However, rubidium fountains are currently being developed that are even more stable than caesium fountain clocks. All commercial rubidium frequency standards operate by disciplining a crystal oscillator to the rubidium hyperfine transition of 6  834  682  610.904  324  Hz. The amount of light from a rubidium discharge lamp that reaches a photodetector through a resonance cell will drop by about 0.1 when the rubidium vapor in the resonance cell is exposed to microwave power near the transition frequency . The crystal oscillator is stabilized to the rubidium transition by detecting the light dip while sweeping an Radio frequency RF frequency synthesizer synthesizer referenced to the crystal through the transition frequency. 1. Isotopes of rubidium

Rubidium Rb has 24 isotope s, with naturally occurring rubidium being composed of just two isotopes Rb 85 72.2 and the radioactive Rb 87 27.8 . Normal mixes of rubidium are radioactive enough to fog photographic film in approximately 30 to 60 days. Standard atomic mass is 85.4678 3 unified atomic mass unit u Rb 87 has a half life of 4.88× 10 sup 10 sup years. It readily substitutes for potassium in mineral s, and is therefore fairly widespread. Rb has been used extensively in rock dating dating rocks Rb 87 decays to stable strontium 87 by emission of a negative beta particle . During Fractional crystallization geology fractional crystallization , Sr tends to become concentrated in plagioclase , leaving Rb in the liquid phase. Hence, the Rb Sr ratio in residual magma may increase over time, resulting in rocks with increasing Rb Sr ratios with increasing rock differentiation differentiation . Highest ratios 10 or higher occur in pegmatite s. If the initial amount of Sr is known or can be extrapolated, the age can be determined by measurement of the Rb and Sr concentrations and the Sr 87 Sr 86 ratio. The dates indicate the true age of the minerals only if the rocks have not been subsequently altered. See rubidium strontium dating for a more detailed discussion. Rb 82 is used in some ... of Sr 82. Rubidium 87 Rubidium 87 is an isotope of rubidium . Rubidium 87 was the first and the most popular atom for making Bose Einstein condensate s in dilute atomic gas ses. 1. Rubidium-strontium dating

The rubidium strontium dating method is a radiometric dating technique that geology geologists use to determine the rock dating age of rocks . Development of this process was aided by Fritz Strassmann , who later went on to discover nuclear fission with Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner . The utility of the rubidium strontium isotope system results from the fact that sup 87 sup Rb one of the isotopes of rubidium decays to sup 87 sup Sr with a halflife of 49 billion years. Different mineral s in a given geologic setting can have a distinctly different ratio of strontium 87 to strontium 86 sup 87 sup Sr sup 86 sup Sr as a consequence of different ages, original Rb Sr values and the initial sup 87 sup Sr sup 86 sup Sr. If these minerals Fractional crystallization geology crystallized from the same silica silicic melt, each mineral had the same initial sup 87 sup Sr sup 86 sup Sr as the parent melt. However, because Rb substitutes for K in minerals and these minerals have different Potassium K Calcium Ca ratios, the minerals will have had different Rb Sr ratios. During Fractional crystallization geology fractional crystallization , Sr tends to become concentrated in plagioclase , leaving Rb in the liquid phase. Hence, the Rb Sr ratio in residual magma may increase over time, resulting in rocks with increasing Rb Sr ratios with increasing differentiation. 1. Rubidium silver iodide

Rubidium silver iodide is a ternary compound ternary inorganic compound with the formula RbAg sub 4 sub I sub 5 sub . It an unusual solid where the electrical conductivity involves movement of silver ion s within the crystal lattice. It was discovered while searching for chemicals which had the ionic conductivity properties of alpha phase silver iodide at temperatures below the 146 C for AgI. ref name Smart Rubidium silver iodide can be formed by melting together ref name Popov or grinding together ref name Peng stoichiometric quantities of rubidium iodide and silver I iodide . The reported conductivity is 25 Siemens unit siemens per metre that is a 1 1 10  mm bar would have a resistance of 400 ohms along the long axis . The crystal structure is composed of sets of iodine tetrahedra they share faces through which the silver ions are able to diffuse. ref cite journal title Crystal Structure of the Solid Electrolyte, RbAg4I5 first S. last Geller journal Science year 1967 volume 157 issue 3786 doi 10.1126 science.157.3786.310 pages 310 312 pmid 17734228 ref Rubidium silver iodide was proposed around 1970 as a solid electrolyte for batteries, and has been used in conjunction with electrodes of silver and of triiodide RbI sub 3 sub . ref name Smart Rubidium silver iodide family is a group of compounds and solid solutions which are isostructural with the RbAg sub 4 sub I sub 5 sub alpha modification. 1. Alkali halide

The alkali halides are the family of ionic compound s with simple chemical formula X sup sup Y sup sup or XY, where X is an alkali metal and Y is a halogen . One of the most well known of these is sodium chloride or common table salt. In standard room conditions dry alkali halides tend to exist as white or translucent crystalline solids. The internal crystalline structure is centered cubic , usually face centered cubic . The numbers beside the compounds show the electronegativity difference between the elements based on the Pauling scale . The higher the number is, the more ionic the bond is. 1. Secondary frequency standard

In telecommunication s, a secondary frequency standard is a frequency standard that does not have inherent accuracy , and therefore must be calibrated against a primary standard primary frequency standard . Secondary standards include crystal oscillator s and rubidium standard s. A crystal oscillator depends for its frequency on its physical dimensions, which vary with fabrication and environmental conditions. A rubidium standard is a secondary standard even though it uses atomic transitions, because it takes the form of a gas cell through which an optical Signalling telecommunication signal is passed. The gas cell has inherent inaccuracies because of gas pressure variations, including those induced by temperature variations. There are also variations in the concentrations of the required buffer gases, which variations cause frequency deviations.
