Richard Andrew Rosser, Baron Rosser born 5 October 1944 is a British former trade union leader and politician. Initially employed by London Transport Board London Transport he joined the staff of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association TSSA early in his working career, representing London Transport s white collar staff in negotiations with the management. He rose through the ranks of the TSSA to be an Assistant General Secretary one of two, at the time , and in 1989 he was elected General Secretary of the union i.e. in day to day control, but answerable to an elected Executive Committee of lay members, and to the Annual Conference . Rosser was re elected twice, serving a total of fifteen years in office before his retirement in 2004 &ndash a record second only to the thirty years 1906 1936 served by Alexander Walkden . During his time at the TSSA, Rosser was also a magistrate and was Chairman of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party UK Labour Party in 1997 98. Following his retirement from TSSA he was made a life peer as Baron Rosser , of Ickenham in the London Borough of Hillingdon , taking his seat in the House of Lords on the Labour Party benches in the summer of 2004. In mathematics , the Kleene&ndash Rosser paradox is a paradox that shows that certain systems of formal logic are inconsistent , in particular the version of Haskell Curry Curry s combinatory logic introduced in 1930, and Alonzo Church Church s original lambda calculus , introduced in 1932&ndash 1933, both originally intended as systems of formal logic. The paradox was exhibited by Stephen Kleene and J. B. Rosser in 1935. The paradox Kleene and Rosser were able to show that both systems are able to characterize and enumerate their provably total definable number theoretic functions, which enabled them to construct a term that essentially replicates the Richard paradox in formal language. Curry later managed to identify the crucial ingredients of the calculi that allowed the construction of this paradox, and used this to construct a much simpler paradox, now known as Curry s paradox . The Rosser Reeves Ruby , Weighing convert 138.7 carat g , is one of the world s largest and finest Star ruby star rubies . This Sri Lanka n stone is renowned for its great color and well defined star pattern. Advertising mogul Rosser Reeves , who donated the piece to the Smithsonian Institution Smithsonian in 1965, carried it around as a lucky stone, referring to it as his baby. He often stated that he had acquired the stone at an auction in Istanbul in the mid 1950s. He actually bought the stone from Robert C. Nelson Jr. of New York who was acting on behalf of Firestone & Parson of Boston . Firestone & Parson were selling the stone for Mr. Paul Fisher of New York. Mr. Robert Fisher, Paul s father, had bought the ruby at an auction in London in 1953.
