  1. Sliding pillar

unreferenced date July 2008 Image MorganSuspension.jpg thumb Sliding pillar suspension on a Morgan. A sliding pillar suspension vehicle suspension is one in which the stub axle and wheel assembly are attached to a fixed vertical pillar or kingpin which slides up and down through a bush or bushes which are attached to the vehicle chassis, usually as part of transverse outrigger assemblies. Sliding pillar independent suspension was first used by Decauville in 1898, the first recorded instance of independent front suspension on a motor vehicle. In this system, the stub axle carrying the wheel was fixed to the bottom of a pillar which slid up and down through a bush in a transverse axle member fixed to the front of the chassis. The top of the pillar was fixed and pivotted on a transverse semi elliptic spring. This system was copied by Sizaire Naudin a few years later. In around 1904, the New Jersey inventor, J. Walter Christie introduced a sliding pillar suspension system with vertical coil springs, which would appear to be the inspiration for that used by Lancia on its Lancia Lambda Lambda from around 1922 on. In turn, this was copied by Nash for its Nash 600 600 model for one year, perhaps because each of these cars was the first in its country constructed using the very light Monocoque Automobiles unibody technique. Sliding pillar suspension systems have also been used by several cyclecar manufacturers, the French maker Tracta , and in several prototype vehicles. In 1909 H.F.S. Morgan introduced a superficially similar system using a sliding stub axle on a fixed pillar, used on Morgan Motor Company cars up to the current time. Although this has been widely described as sliding pillar it is in fact not one. Category Automotive suspension technologies automotive part stub ru ...   more details

Image Hauntedpillar.jpg thumb right Haunted Pillar The Haunted Pillar is all that remains of a farmer s market that once stood at Fifth and Broad Street Augusta, Georgia Broad Street s in downtown Augusta, Georgia . The market stood from 1830 until February 7, 1878, when it was destroyed in a tornado . According to local legend an attempt to move, destroy the pillar, or even touch it will result in death. According to one story, a preacher who was denied the right to preach there, ... threatened that a great wind would destroy the place except for one pillar and that whoever tried to remove this remaining pillar would be struck dead, according to a person interviewed by The Augusta Chronicle http chronicle.augusta.com history pillar.html . The market was located directly in the middle of Broad Street, and once it was removed Augustans were reluctant to build there again. Now that the Market House is in ruins, we think it may be opportune to suggest that it never be rebuilt upon the same spot. It was, at best, an unsightly edifice and marred the grand boulevard upon which it was mistakenly located, said an article in The Augusta Chronicle a week after the market was destroyed.
