Refimprove date June 2009 Image Romanche Trench.jpg right 300px The Romanche Trench , also called the Romanche Furrow or Romanche Gap , is the third deepest of the major oceanic trench trench es of the Atlantic Ocean , after the Puerto Rico Trench and the South Sandwich Trench . It bisects the Mid Atlantic Ridge just north of the equator at the narrowest part of the Atlantic between Brazil and West Africa, extending from 2 N to 2 S and from 16 W to 20 W. The trench has been formed by the actions of the Romanche Fracture Zone , a portion of which is an active transform boundary offsetting sections of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. It is situated between the Sierra Leone Basin to the north northeast, the South Atlantic Basin to the east southeast, the Northern Brazilian Basin to the south southwest, and North Atlantic Ridge to the west northwest. Geologically, it is at the seam of the South American Plate to the West and the African Plate to the East. The trench has a depth of 7,760 m, is 300  km long and has an average width of 19  km and allows for a major circulation of deep ocean basin water from the west Atlantic to the east Atlantic basins. Deep water flow through the trench is from west to east with a rate of 3.6 10 sup 6 sup m s of 1.57 C water. ref Schlitzer, Reiner, et al. 1985 A meridional sup 14 sup C and sup 39 sup Ar section in northeast Atlantic deep water Journal of Geophysical Research, Volume 90, Issue C10, p. 6945 6952 http adsabs.harvard.edu cgi bin nph bib query?bibcode 1985JGR....90.6945S& db key PHY& data type HTML& format ref References Reflist External links http channel.nationalgeographic.com episode drain the ocean 3639 Overview tab Photos 18 ixzz0S5SEyE8F Drain the Ocean Computer generated image view over airplane flying across the Romanche ... of the Atlantic Ocean marine geo stub de Romanchegraben fr Fosse Romanche hi pl Kraw d Romanche ro Groapa Romanche fi Romanchen hauta zh ...   more details

  1. Trench shield

Unreferenced date December 2006 Trench shields are steel or aluminum structures used for protecting utility worker s while performing their duties within a trench . They are customarily constructed with sidewalls of varying thicknesses held apart by steel or aluminum spreaders. Spreaders can be interchanged to match the width of the trench. The different materials and building designs lead to a variety of depth ratings, i.e. the depth of a trench that the shield can withstand a collapse without buckling. Depth ratings are determined by registered professional engineer s. A shield should not be confused with a shore. While they may serve the same function, trench shoring is a different physical application that holds up the walls of a trench to prevent collapse. The Tethyan Trench extended at its greatest during Late Cretaceous to Paleocene , from what is now Greece to the Western Pacific Ocean . Subduction at the Tethyan Trench probably caused the continents Africa and India to move towards Eurasia , which resulted in the opening of the Indian Ocean.
