Unreferenced date October 2006 A diceless roleplaying game is a roleplaying game which is not based on chance it does not use randomisers to determine the outcome of events in its roleplaying game system . The style of game is known as diceless because most games use dice as their randomiser some games such as Castle Falkenstein roleplaying game Castle Falkenstein use other randomisers such as playing cards as substitutes for dice, and are not considered diceless . Proponents of this solution argue that in all game systems, decisions are ultimately made by the GM, and rolling dice merely slows gameplay. Opponents may perceive diceless systems as more arbitrary and lacking the feeling of real unpredictability for example, the potential death of a character as a result of bad luck in a dice roll. Notable diceless games Amber Diceless Roleplaying Game uses no randomization, although secret information does create uncertainty for players Nobilis Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game uses a resource management system inspired by collectible card game s. Unreferenced date March 2009 RPG A roleplaying game system is a set of game mechanics used in a roleplaying game RPG to determine the outcome of a Player character character s in game actions. While early roleplaying games relied heavily on either group consensus or the judgement of a single player the Dungeon Master or Game Master or on randomizers such as dice, later generations of narrativist games allow roleplaying to influence the creative input and output of the players, so both acting out roles and employing rules take part in shaping the outcome of the game. A roleplaying game system also affects the game environment, which can take any of several forms. Generic roleplaying game systems , such as the d20 System and GURPS , are not tied to a specific storytelling genre or campaign setting and can be used as a framework to play many different types of RPG. Others, such as Dungeons & Dragons , are designed to depict a specific genre or style of play, and others, such as the first and second editions of RuneQuest , are not only genre specific but come bundled with a specific campaign setting to which the game mechanics are inseparably tied. Many roleplaying game systems involve the generation of random numbers by which success or failure of an action is determined. This can be done using dice probably the most common method or Playing card card s as in Castle Falkenstein roleplaying game Castle Falkenstein , but other methods may be used depending on the system. The random result is added to an attribute roleplaying games attribute which is then compared to a difficulty rating , although many variations on this game mechanic exist from system to system. A party is a group of characters adventuring together in a roleplaying game . In Tabletop roleplaying game tabletop roleplaying , a party is composed of a group of players, occasionally with the addition of non player character allies sometimes called henchmen controlled by those players or by the gamemaster . In computer games, the relationship between the party and the players varies considerably. Online roleplaying games or MMORPG parties are often, in the above sense, of the same constituency as tabletop parties, except that the allies are always controlled to a lesser or greater extent by the computer AI. In single player computer games, the player generally controls all party members to a varying degree. Examples of games which have parties include the tabletop RPG Vampire the Requiem , the single player online roleplaying Baldur s Gate series Baldur s Gate series , MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft , Anarchy Online and Warhammer Online , and the multi player computer action RPG Final Fantasy XI . Party role in gameplay Resource management is a crucial part of roleplaying games, and any player controlled character, whether they can participate in combat or not, are always useful if they have the ability to carry heavy or bulky items. Non player characters used by the player with only this purpose in mind are called mules or sometimes bots , although bot is alternatively used to describe non player characters whose sole use is their ability, usually with spells, to enhance other characters statistics or abilities. Usually, however, and exclusively in tabletop and single player games, party members are a valued part of the player s tactical potential. Unreferenced date March 2008 Wushu is a free Generic roleplaying game system universal roleplaying game by Dan Bayn released under the Creative Commons license. Wushu is a non traditional roleplaying game. In a traditional game, a player would describe his character s action, and then roll dice to see if it succeed. In Wushu, a player describes what his character does, and then rolls dice to determine how effective the action was. For example, in a traditional RPG, one would say I try to hit him with my sword. and roll dice to determine success. In Wushu, one would say I slash across his stomach, releasing a spray of blood. and then roll dice to determine the effect on the larger plot. The description, rather than a character s stats, also determines the number of dice that are rolled. Each detail in the description adds one more die to the roll up to dice cap determined by the gamemaster , thus making the action more effective. Wushu runs on several principles. The first is the Principle of Narrative Truth. This means that whatever a player describes is exactly what happens. By doing so, Wushu can more closely emulate an over the top action movie style of play, since there are no penalties for difficult or flashy maneuvers. Counterbalancing the first principle is the second principle the Veto. Anyone at the table, gamemaster or player, can veto any detail and ask the player to describe something different. This helps ensure that the tone and genre of the game is maintained at all times. Players can even use this mechanic to suggest alternatives to one another, which helps create a stronger shared storytelling experience. Wushu has acquired a devoted following. The game .... The game is available electronically for free. Nemesis uses the One Roll Engine ORE gaming system, a dice pool system where matched die results determine success. Setting Nemesis emulates the works of H. P. Lovecraft , Stephen King , Ambrose Bierce , Brian Lumley , William Peter Blatty and settings like Delta Green . System main One Roll Engine NEMESIS uses the ORE system, first introduced in Godlike role playing game Godlike , in which the dice pool rolling system where matching results on dice are formed into sets to help determine the outcome of an action in how successfully and swiftly the action is performed. The name One Roll comes from the nature that one roll of the dice determines the initiative, success, location and damage of an action. As an update to the ORE system, Nemesis introduces the Madness Meter which is derived from Unknown Armies , to simulate insanity and mental trauma, replaces Hard Dice with a new mechanic of Expert Dice , and renames Wiggle Dice to Trump Dice , to keep a more mature theme.
