Willard Frederick Rockwell, Sr. 1888 1978 was a businessman who helped shape and name what eventually became the Rockwell International company. Rockwell was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , and in 1919, bought his own business which he transformed. He married Clara Thayer, a descendant of John Alden who traveled across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The couple had five children, Kay, Janet, Willard, Jr., Eleanor and Betty. Willard, Jr. followed his father into the company business in 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA. Born in Providence, Rhode Island , Rockwell was a fast talking nut comic who developed an act as a lecturing doctor, sometimes with a stethoscope and an oversized five foot banana as props, billed as Doc Rockwell Quack Quack Quack . One sign of Rockwell s surprising success was his appearances as the headline act at the Palace Theatre Broadway Palace Theater in New York, the single most coveted booking in vaudeville.
