The Punk RockShelter 9PM211 was an archaeological site found in Putnam County, Georgia . The site flooded in 1979, putting it 65 ft. under Lake Oconee. It was not actually a rockshelter, but a jumble of granite boulders or tors. These tors happened to create a shelter like area. Unfortunately, due to poor land management in the 19th and 20th century associated with cotton farming, the shelter floor area is now underneath at least a meter deep of red clay and silt mud. The Native Americans at the site were most likely Hitchiti in ancestry. br Discovery The Punk RockShelter was discovered by Greg Paulk and Dean Wood on November 15, 1974. They discovered it while conducting the Wallace Reservoir Archaeological Survey. Excavation On November 18, John Doolin accompanied Paulk and Chester DePratter to excavate a 1 by 2 meter deep trench between the back wall and the front entrance of the shelter. This archaeological site contains evidence of mass bison hunts, a phenomenon that is usually associated with the Great Plains hundreds of miles to the north. This site is the southernmost site where mass bison hunts have taken place. These hunts were Buffalo jump bison jumps which involved stampeding a herd of bison over a cliff, and then butchering the dead animals. In the shelter, there are two distinct zones of bison bones. Each zone represents several bison jumps over relatively little time, perhaps no more than 50 100 years, but the two zones occurred nearly 7500 years apart. The earlier bones are dated to Paleo Indian period hunts, while the later occurred in around 500 BC. The site was originally investigated by legendary Texas archaeologist David S. Dibble . Archaeologist Vaughn Bryant has investigated this strange lack of intermediate hunts. Using pollen samples, he discovered that the area had only seen good grass cover for grazing two times since 10,000 BC, and that each time coincided with a deposit of bones. At other times, this area was too inhospitable to support large herds of grazing animals. Bonfire Shelter demonstrates the correlation between climatic change s and the archaeological evidence we can find today. References Fagan, Brian. Ancient North America . Construction Single sided designs allow easy access and allow the heat of a fire into the shelter, while full roofed designs have much better heat retention. As a general rule the roof should be at least a foot thick and opaque to bright sunlight. Artificial bivouacs can be constructed using a variety of available materials from corrugated iron sheeting or plywood , to Tent groundsheets or purpose made hootchies bashas . Although these have the advantage of being speedy to erect and resource efficient they have relatively poor insulation properties and are relatively easily damaged by the myriad sharp objects usually found in camp.
