Born in Chicago , he received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1957, where he was also employed as a member of the faculty. He served as the Provost education provost of the University of Chicago from 1982 and 1984. He served as the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. from 1984 to 1994. He is currently an adjunct professor at the University of California, San Diego . As an anthropologist and archaeologist, Robert McCormick Adams has had a wide ranging career spanning many fields. Geographically, his interests have involved extensive fieldwork in the Middle East, but have also included Mexico. With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, he has studied the course of development of urban civilizations over many millennia, and he has also dealt with the history of technology. Partly as an outgrowth of decades of experience in Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia, he has until recently been involved in studies of multiethnic violence under the joint sponsorship of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Adams has proposed, based on his excavations in Mesopotamia , that there was no single condition behind the complex societies of ancient cities and states they were a product of numerous interrelated conditions, especially social organization and craft specialization. McCormick was born in Great Yarmouth , England . He was assistant surgeon on the HMS Hecla 1815 Hecla under William Edward Parry in 1827, surgeon on the HMS Beagle Beagle in 1832 when Charles Darwin was working as an unofficial naturalist McCormick left the ship in Brazil , and surgeon on the James Clark Ross s Antarctic expedition between 1839 and 1842. On the latter voyage most of the naturalist s duties were performed by Joseph Dalton Hooker , with McCormick concentrating on geology and bird collecting. McCormick also led an unsuccessful search party in search of John Franklin in the Forlorn Hope . His autobiography was entitled Voyages of Discovery in the Arctic and Antarctic Seas and around the World 1884 . The South Polar Skua Stercorarius maccormicki was named for him by Howard Saunders . He represented Lambton East in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1908 to 1914 as a Liberal Party of Ontario Liberal member. He was born in County Armagh , Ireland , the son of Joseph McCormick who was of Scotland Scottish descent, and came to Warwick, Ontario Warwick Township , Canada East in 1862. He became a brick maker and bought a brickyard there in 1877. In 1876, he married Elizabeth Smith. McCormick served on the council for Warwick, was reeve from 1891 to 1894 and warden for Lambton County, Ontario Lambton County in 1892.
