It was recently remodeled and opened back up for the first time ever for the 2006 2007 school year. Beginning Martha B. King came to Manatee County from Georgia in 1924 to begin teaching at Ballard Elementary School. Over the years she worked as teacher or principal at six different schools. She was instrumental in starting a hot lunch program for elementary school children and was one of the first area educators to tutor Hispanic migrant children. She remained an active educator after her retirement from the school district and for 15 years taught basic skills to inmates in the Manatee County jail. President Harry Truman awarded her a citation for her work at the Manatee County chapter of the Red Cross during World War II . The middle school at 600 75th St. N.W. was named for her in 1979. King died in January 1985. She was 84.
