    Richard of Devizes fl. late 12th century , England English chronicler, was a monk of St Swithin s house at Winchester, Hampshire Winchester . His birthplace is probably indicated by his surname, Devizes in Wiltshire , but of his life we know nothing. He is credited by John Bale Bale with the composition of the Annales de Wintonia , which are edited by Henry Richards Luard in the second volume of the Annales Monastici . The first motte and bailey castle on this site was built in 1080 by Saint Osmund Osmund , Bishop of Salisbury . This castle burnt down in 1113 and was rebuilt in stone by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury , by 1120. He occupied it under Henry I of England Henry I and later under Stephen of England Stephen . Roger sided with Stephen and the castle was taken and retaken. It then remained the property of the Crown and it was used as a prison by Henry II of England Henry II and Henry III of England Henry III . It went on to become the property of Catherine of Aragon , the Wives of Henry VIII first wife of Henry VIII of England Henry VIII .     John Kent 1559 1 October 1630 was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1624. Kent was the son of Roger Kent of Copenhall, Cheshire and his wife Petronelle Hawkins. He was a student of Barnard s Inn in about 1586. He was in the service of the Earl of Hertford. From 1591 to 1592 he was chamberlain of Devizes and from 1592 was town clerk of Devizes from c.1592. He was also coroner in 1592. In 1597, he was elected Member of Parliament for Devizes UK Parliament constituency Devizes . From 1597 to 1626 he was clerk of the peace for Wiltshire. He was mayor of Devizes from 1602 t o 1603. Career The second son of Robert Raynsford of Staverton, Northamptonshire , by his first wife, Mary, daughter of Thomas Kirton of Thorpe Mandeville in the same county, he was born in 1605. He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford on 13 December 1622, but left the university without a degree. In 1630 he was elected recorder of Daventry , being then a student of Lincoln s Inn , where he was called to the bar on 16 October 1632, and elected treasurer in 1660. In 1653 he was elected recorder judge recorder of Northampton , which borough he represented in the Convention parliament of 1660, and also in Charles I of England Charles I s first parliament, until his elevation to the bench. As he was designated a member of the projected order of Knights of the Royal Oak , it is probable that during the Interregnum he had shown himself a king s friend. On 26 October 1660 he was sworn serjeant at law , and on 16 November 1663 was raised to the Exchequer of pleas exchequer bench, having in the interval received the honour of knighthood.
