  1. Reverberation room

A reverberation chamber or room is a room designed to create a diffuse or random incidence sound field i.e. one with a uniform distribution of acoustic energy and random direction of sound incidence over a short time period . Reverberation chambers tend to be large rooms the resulting sound field becomes more diffuse with increased path length and have very hard exposed surfaces. The change of Acoustic impedance impedance compared to the air these surfaces present to incident sound is so large that virtually all of the acoustic energy that hits a surface is reflected back into the room. Arranging the room surfaces including the ceiling to be non parallel helps inhibit the formation of standing waves additional acoustic diffusers are often used to create more reflecting surfaces and further encourage even distribution of any particular sound field. The main uses for a reverberation chamber are measurement microphone calibration , measurement of the sound power of a source, and measurement of the absorption coefficient of a material. All these techniques assume the sound field in the chamber to be diffuse, and will normally use a broadband sound source e.g. white noise or pink noise so that the resulting sound field contains acoustic energy across the whole audible range. Cleanup rewrite date May 2009 Expert subject date November 2008 Reverberation mapping is to day a statistical method within astrophysics preferably used in connection with velocity analysis of accretion disc gaseous discs around Supermassive black hole supermassive compact objects . Currently, the only known objects that can pack enough matter in such a small space are black holes, or things that will evolve into black holes within astrophysically short timescales. For active galaxy active galaxies farther away, the width of broad spectral lines can be used to probe the gas orbiting near the event horizon . The technique of reverberation mapping uses variability of these lines to measure the mass , and perhaps the rotation spin of the presumed supermassive black hole that powers the active galaxy s engine . Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Critical distance is, in sound audio physics , the distance at which the sound pressure level of the direct and the reverberation reverberant sound fields are equal when dealing with a directional source. In other words, the point in space where the amplitude of a reflected echo is the same as that of the source. This distance is dependent on the geometry and Absorption acoustics absorption of the space in which the sound waves propagate, as well as the dimensions and shape of the sound source. 1. Cascading strings

Cascading strings also sometimes known as tumbling strings is an arrangement technique of British light music . This technique is associated in the U.S. with the style of Easy Listening known as Beautiful Music . The cascading strings effect was first developed by British composer arranger Ronald Binge , but most associated with Annunzio Paolo Mantovani and his Mantovani Orchestra. U.S. Record producers Hugo and Luigi also did a series of recordings under the name Cascading Voices and later Cascading Strings. One effect of the cascading strings technique is to emulate the acoustic properties of a large hall such as a cathedral , through simulated reverberation . The effect is achieved in an orchestra using multiple string section s, which would play slightly different parts from one another, in a cascading effect, thus creating the illusion of reverberation of the original sound. 1. Convolution reverb

In audio signal processing, convolution reverb is a process for digitally simulating the reverberation of a physical or virtual space. It is based on the mathematical convolution operation, and uses a pre recorded audio sample of the impulse response of the space being modelled. To apply the reverberation effect, the impulse response recording is first stored in a digital signal processor digital signal processing system. This is then convolution convolved with the incoming audio signal to be processed. The process of convolution multiplies each sample of the audio to be processed reverberated with the samples in the impulse response file. Creation of impulse responses An impulse response is a recording of the reverberation that is caused by an acoustic space when an ideal Dirac delta function impulse is played. However, an ideal impulse is a mathematical construct, and cannot exist in reality, as it would have to be infinitesimal infinitesimally narrow in time. Therefore, approximations have to be used the sound of an electric spark or a starter pistol shot, for instance. A recording of this approximated ideal impulse may be used directly as an impulse response. Alternatively, a longer sound can be used to excite a space typically a sine sweep , which is then put through a process of deconvolution to produce an impulse response. This approach has the advantage that such sounds are less susceptible to distortion however, it requires more sophisticated processing to produce a usable impulse response. A third approach involves using Maximum length sequence maximum length sequences ... response of a reverberation unit, instead of sampling a real space.
