Allan Reuss June 15, 1915 &ndash June 4, 1988 was an American jazz guitarist. Reuss was born New York City , he began playing professionally as a banjo ist at age 12. He learned guitar from George Van Eps . In the middle of the 1930s, Reuss began playing in Benny Goodman s orchestra, playing with him on and off until 1943. He played with Paul Whiteman and then with Jack Teagarden from 1939 to 1940 following this he was with Jimmy Dorsey 1941 42 and Harry James 1942 43 . Alongside his spots in orchestras, he was a frequent session musician for New York recordings. In 1945 he moved to Los Angeles , where he continued as a studio guitarist, played with Arnold Ross , and led a trio. Among his credits are work with Mildred Bailey , Bunny Berigan , Benny Carter , Billie Holiday , Lionel Hampton , Coleman Hawkins , Teddy Wilson and Charlie Ventura . He is best known for his writings on composer Franz Liszt , including a highly thought of biography Ein Lebensbild 1898 . He also authored the book Liszls Lieder 1906 and penned several essays on the life and works of Liszt. As a composer, he mainly produced works for solo piano and also made arrangements of several works by Liszt. Life and career Born in New York City to German immigrants to the United States, Reuss lived most of his life in Germany. He began his musical training at the age of 11 in G ttingen where he was a pupil of composer and music critic Eduard Kriiger 1805 1885 from 1862 1869. He then became a disciple of Franz Liszt , studying with the great composer from 1870 1879. He was also a student of Marie Gabriel Augustin Savard in Paris in 1876 1877. Biography Daniel Reuss studied with Barend Schuurman at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands . In 1982 he founded the Oude Muziek Koor Arnhem, which attained a very high level of performance. It decided to expire in June 2007 after 25 years. From 1988 until 1998 Daniel Reuss also conducted vocal ensemble VENUS. This chamber choir consists of 26 advanced amateurs who perform twice a year with a combination of classical and modern choral repertoire and commissioned compositions. From 1990 until 1997 he conducted the Dutch Student Chamber Choir, that focuses on bringing young talent together. In 1990, he became director of Cappella Amsterdam, which he turned into a full time professional ensemble that is now one of the most sought after in the Netherlands. File August emanuel reuss.jpg thumb August Emanuel von Reuss 1811 1873 , Austria n geologist and palaeontologist , was born at B lina in Bohemia on 8 July 1811, the son of Franz Ambrosius Reuss 1761 1830 . He was educated for the medical profession, graduating in 1834 at the Charles University in Prague University of Prague , and afterwards practising for fifteen years at B lina. His leisure was devoted to mineralogy and geology , and the results of his researches were published in lang de Geognostische Skizzen aus B hmen 1840 1844 and lang de Die Versteinerungen der B hmischen Kreideformation 1845 1846 . In 1849 he gave up his medical practice, and became professor of mineralogy at the university of Prague. There he established a fine mineralogical collection, and he became the first lecturer on geology. In 1863 he was appointed professor of mineralogy in the University of Vienna . He investigated the Cretaceous fauna of Gosau , and studied the crustacean Crustacea , including Entomostraca , the coral s, bryozoa , and especially the Foraminifera of various geological formations and countries.
