Image SVD big.gif right 250px The SVD is a small hobbyist hardware device that emulates a floppy drive and floppy disk that is suitable for attachment to an old computer such as a TRS80 TRS 80 or Apple 2 . Floppy disk images are downloaded to the SVD through a personal computer PC s serial port RS232 . The SVD presents these images as physical floppies to the old computer, allowing it to be booted or to otherwise run old software. Used mostly by retrocomputing enthusiasts, the SVD provides a mechanism by which archived software can be reliably and easily loaded on the old computer equipment, aiding in the process of restoring and using it. Unlike using floppy images with emulator s running on a PC, the SVD is used with physical hardware. 1. Formatted Disk Image

Orphan date February 2009 advert date January 2011 improve date January 2011 FDI is a file image of a disc created with the Disk2FDI IBM PC compatible PC software. It is often used to read Amiga or Commodore 64 C64 discs and other discs formatted in a way that normally can t be read with a PC. ref cite web title Disk2FDI Homepage url http www.oldskool.org disk2fdi 070728 oldskool.org ref The software uses two methods Connect two floppy disk drive s to a PC and fill drive 0 with an ordinary PC formatted floppy disc . Drive 1 receives a foreign format disc. Then the software reads as normal from drive 0, but then selects drive 1 instead. It thus bypasses obstacles that would make the floppy controller otherwise refuse the format of the foreign disk. In particular it gets the Phase locked loop PLL to sync. Connect one disc drive to the PC via a cable that lets the parallel port interrupt pin Acknowledge trigger on the read signal. The Index signal is also read on the Select line. Using both signals a map of the position of the data per revolution can be built. The PC only needs to make the drive spin and use correct track and head. The reading is done by software exploiting interrupt timings. References references Category Disk images Category Computer file formats Category Amiga Category Retrocomputing ...   more details
